  NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Melvin Franklin
Melvin Franklin (David Melvin English) (October 12, 1942 – February 23, 1995) was an American bass singer, best known for his role as a member of Motown singing group The Temptations from 1961 to 1994.
Franklin was usually called upon to deliver ad-libs, harmony vocals, and, during the psychedelic soul era, notable sections of the main verses.
Franklin's style owes much to the example of Defoe and Addison and Steele; his satiric practice--especially his mastery of the creation of diverse personae and, at times, his use of irony--reflects his familiarity with Swift's satire, even though Franklin's effects are very different.

Moreover, their story is a long, episodic one of perseverance and dedication that extends from their origins in 1961 to the present day.
The Temptations were initially formed from two Detroit-based vocal harmony groups: the Primes (a trio of relocated Alabamans that included Eddie Kendricks and Paul Williams) and the Distants (a quintet whose members included Otis Williams, Melvin Franklin and Elbridge Bryant).
Still, the Temptations had trouble establishing themselves in the beginning, and by the end of 1963 - much like the early story of the Supremes - they had only a string of non-charting singles to their credit.
