The Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh (RCPE) was established in the 17th century.
Edinburgh physicians began to hold meetings in their own homes to discuss the regulation of medical practice and the ways in which standards in medicine could be improved.
Central to its role is the joint provision of the Member of the Royal College of Physicians (United KingdomUK) (MRCP(UK)) examination, which is the nationally (UK) and internationally recognised standard of excellence enabling a doctor to practice as a specialist (consultant).

In 1848 Quain 1848 was appointed assistant physician at the Brompton Hospital Diseases of the Chest.
In 1846 Quain became a member of the Royal College of Physicians, a fellow in 1851.

Dr David Thomas left his post as consultant cardiologist at Ysbyty Gwynedd in Bangor, two-and-a-half years ago after it was discovered he was not a member of the Royal College of Physicians, as he had claimed.
Members there decided he could continue to be registered as a specialist in general internal medicine and cardiology - for which he is qualified - as long as he works under supervision.
The Royal College of Physicians said he remains unregistered with them, although membership is not essential for a consultant post.

The Royal College of Physicians in London said Friday that Vannan's training at that institution is not the same as certification in cardiology, either in the United States or in Britain.
But Royal College officials told the Register that this is not the same as cardiology board certification and that, in fact, gaining cardiology credentials there would require at least an additional four years of training.
At the hearing, Medical Board members said they did not know that the rule was being used to appoint out-of-state physicians with no current board certification to posts that allow them to oversee doctors with licenses and certificates.
