The Northern Ireland Assembly is a 108-member legislative body for Northern Ireland that sits at Stormont with powers devolved to it from the Westminster parliament.
The assembly was created as part of the Good Friday Agreement of 1998 and the first election to it was held on June 25, 1998.
The 108 Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) are elected from 18 multi-member constituencies (the same constituencies used for Westminster elections) by the Single Transferable Vote.

Jeffrey Donaldson, Nora Beare and Arlene Foster were elected as members of the UUP but moved to the DUP.

John Reid, Britain's Northern Ireland secretary, suspended the assembly for 24 hours on Saturday to give the four parties of the ruling coalition more time to resolve their differences.
The suspension meant that a make-or-break vote on electing a new Protestant leader of the assembly could be postponed for six weeks, probably until September 24.
Sinn Fein has since argued that the IRA never intended to scrap weapons until after plans for military cutbacks and police reform were completed in Northern Ireland, a position rejected by all the other parties.

The Institute is also involved in providing training for new parliamentarians and public servants in Northern Ireland, as well as the civil servants from Ireland and Britain who will be responsible for implementing cross-border bodies and British-Irish bodies.
