Membranous glomerulonephritis is the commonest primary cause of the nephrotic syndrome in adults, responsible for ~ 40% of cases, while lipoid nephrosis (minimal change disease) is the commonest etiology of primary nephrotic syndrome in children (causing ~65% of cases).
Membranous glomerulonephritis is an antibody mediated disease in which immune complexes localize to the subepithelial aspect of the capillary loop - between the outer aspect of the basement membrane and the podocyte.
Membranous glomerulonephritis is the commonest primary glomerular cause of the nephrotic syndrome in adults and the etiology of this patient's disorder.

 MedlinePlus Medical Encyclopedia: Membranous nephropathy
Membranous nephropathy is a kidney disorder resulting in disruption of kidney function because of inflammation of the glomerulus and changes in the glomerular basement membrane.
Membranous nephropathy is caused by thickening of the capillary wall of the glomerular basement membrane (the deepest membrane) by immune complexes.
Membranous nephropathy may be a primary renal disease of uncertain origin, or it may be associated with other conditions.

Membranous glomerulonephritis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Membranous glomerulonephritis (MGN), also known as membranous nephropathy is a slowly progressive disease affecting mostly patients between ages of 30 and 50 years.
85% of MGN cases are classified as primary membranous glomerulonephritis -- that is to say, the cause of the disease is idiopathic (unknown).
By light microscopy, the basement membrane is observed to be diffusively thickened.

They are used in the treatment of many sorts of glomerulonephritis including membranous nephropathy, because the immune system is partly responsible for the damage to the glomeruli, although what triggers the immune system to have this abnormal effect is incompletely understood.

•Most cases of membranous glomerulonephritis (85%) are idiopathic and the etiology is unknown.
•Membranous glomerulonephritis can be caused by malignancies, especially carcinomas, hepatitis B infections and lupus.
•For idiopathic membranous glomerulonephritis, the disease is more common in adults usually in the fifth to seventh decades of life.

MGN is inflammation of the Basement Membrane of the glomeruli of the kidney.
This inflammation damages the basement membrane, which is acting as a sort of filter.
Current research states that membranous glomerulonephritis is the result of deposition in the kidney of immune complexes, which are formed by the antibody-antigen reaction, secondary to an infection elsewhere in the body.

Membranous lupus glomerulonephritis is one of six commonly recognized forms of glomerulonephritis due to lupus.
A nephron is made up of a ball of small capillary blood vessels (glomerulus) that filter your blood and tubules that determine which of the filtered substances are returned to your bloodstream and which are excreted in your urine.
Membranous lupus glomerulonephritis causes the capillary walls of the glomeruli to thicken and leak substances, such as the protein albumin, into your urine.
