Memento mori is a Latin phrase that may be freely translated as "Remember that you are mortal," "Remember you will die," or "Remember your death".
Much memento mori art is associated with the Mexican festival, Day of the Dead, including even skull-shaped candies, and bread loaves adorned with bread "bones".
A modern literary variation on the memento mori may be found, for instance, in the short story El inmortal ("The Immortal," from the 1949 collection El Aleph), by Jorge Luis Borges.

"Memento mori," for those who don't know, is a Latin phrase that, loosely translated, means "images of death." They can be photographs or anything left behind by the dead.
A memento mori is meant to remind the living that death is constant, that it's a part of everyday life, and should be accepted instead of shunned or feared.
For its first 40 minutes, "Memento Mori" is a love story about girls coming of age and finding love, passion, confusion, and withdrawal from society in favor of a special soulmate who understands you when no one else seems capable.

That is exactly how that the protagonist of "Memento", Leonard Shelby (Guy Pearce of "L.A. Confidential"), feels, only in his case, he experiences it all the time.
"Memento", however, is perhaps the most fascinating and judicious use of a non-linear narrative, since it puts the audience into the shoes of the protagonist.
Not surprisingly, "Memento" also holds up well in repeat viewings, since it is an intellectual puzzle that rewards the astute viewer with a foreknowledge of where the story is going.

Memento Mori is the debut release of American extreme metal band Withered, in many ways evocative of the first generation nihilistic death metal acts like Unleashed, Entombed, and Dismember.
“Memento mori”: 36 minutes for 7 tracks sounding of pure terror, anger and devastation of sounds with a death metal discharge inspired by early Entombed and to the classical Swedish metal like Dismember and Unleashed; “Memento mori” sounds a bit sludge metal also.

Memento is defined far more by those qualities than by its ingenious time structure: It's a contemporary film noir, with a full portion of that genre's existential anguish and mental disarray.
In the final analysis, Memento doesn't leap beyond the genre's boundaries in the ways that it sometimes seems it might; it's content to stay between the lines, which gives it a bit of the air of a brilliant formalist exercise, or a graduate dissertation on noirish anomie.

Memento - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Memento is a neo-noir–psychological thriller film written and directed by Christopher Nolan, based on his brother Jonathan's short story "Memento Mori." The film stars Guy Pearce as Leonard Shelby, a former insurance fraud investigator hunting for his wife's murderer.
By the film's end, the two narratives converge into a single color sequence, which is the film's climax.
Although often billed as a 2000 film, Memento debuted at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival to critical acclaim, and received the same response when it was given a limited release in theaters on March 16, 2001.
