  Gaius Memmius
Gaius Memmius (incorrectly called Gemellus, "The Twin"), Roman orator and poet, tribune of the people (66 BC), friend of Lucretius and Catullus.
At first a strong supporter of Pompey, he quarrelled with him, and went over to Caesar, whom he had previously attacked.
Another Gaius Memmius, tribune in 111 BC, attacked the aristocrats on a charge of corrupt relations with Jugurtha.

Caesar himself appears, in an ironic and quite obscene oxymoron, as a "pathic Romulus" (lines 5 and 9), [FN 2] and his alliance with Pompey in the so-called First Triumvirate is mocked in the poem's concluding lines.
Catullus does not seem to be indignant at any illegal activity on the part of these governors, however, but rather at the fact that neither he nor his friends were able to profit from their service as part of these governors' cohorts.
In the end, it is possible to conclude that Memmius' and Piso's only sins consisted of not seeing to it that Catullus and his friends could line their pockets — i.e., considered objectively, these two may have been able and honest governors.

Although he tactfully describes Memmius as a man of good character and good reputation (1.26-27, 140; 3.420; 5.8), he was no doubt well aware of his weaknesses and hoped that he would heed his warnings against the dangers of, for example, ambition and sexual passion.
His philosophical purpose, the enlightenment of Memmius, is both the inspiration and the justification of the poem.
If Lucretius had lived to witness Memmius’ disgrace, he might well have remarked, “Well, what did I tell you?” Memmius naturally felt that he had been made to look foolish in the eyes of the public and took his revenge on the Epicureans in a rather childish way.

Gaius Memmius was a Roman patrician who was at one time married to Sulla's daughter, Fausta.
In 54 BC (one year after Lucretius' death), he stood for consul, but was defeated owing to an electoral violation, which he himself revealed but was afterwards condemned for.
Lucretius dedicated his poem to him, and throughout the epic the poet is at pains to remind Memmius of the sweet rewards of the Epicurean lifestyle and the bitter tribulations of public life.

There is just one contemporary reference to him (or near contemporary, depending on the date of his death): it is found in a letter of Cicero, written in 54 BC, where he briefly agrees with his brother about the ‘flashes of genius’ and ‘craftsmanship’ that characterize Lucretius' poetry.
What we can say for sure is that the poem is dedicated and addressed to a Roman aristocrat named Memmius, although it is not entirely certain which member of the Memmius family this was.
Lucretius expresses a hope for Memmius' friendship, but that does not rule out the possibility of an asymmetric client-patron relation, as distinct from one of genuine social equality.

Lucretius wrote this epic poem to "Memmius", who may be the Gaius Memmius who in 58 BC was a praetor, a judicial official deciding controversies between citizens and between citizens and the government.
There are over a dozen references to "Memmius" scattered throughout the long poem in a variety of contexts in translation, such as "Memmius mine", "my Memmius", and "illustrious Memmius".
Apparently, Lucretius wrote On the Nature of Things in an attempt to convert Gaius Memmius to atomism, but was unsuccessful.
