Memo Aguirre - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Juan Guillermo Aguirre (born 1951), better known as Memo Aguirre, is a famous Chilean singer whose voice has been heard all over Latin America, particularly during the opening acts of superhero cartoon shows during the 1980s.
When Memo Aguirre was a teen, he participated in a group named "Los Sacros".
Aguirre's luck really changed for the better, however, when he was signed by a company named Sound Connection Studios during the middle 1970s.

Legal Memo   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
In this excerpt, the memo advanced an economic argument for the dumping of pollution from first-world countries in the territory of third-world countries.
The excerpt was leaked to the media with the implication that it was a serious, standalone memo, and it instantly became a symbol within the anti-globalization movement of "the arrogant ignorance of many conventional 'economists' concerning the nature of the world we live in" (Brazilian Secretary of the Environment Jose Lutzenberger).
Others view the memo as an example of harsh conditions paralegals face in large law firms, where they are often asked to perform demanding and often useless tasks assigned by their employers.

SignOnSanDiego.com > News > Metro -- Aguirre memo urges major pension benefit rollbacks
In a memo distributed in the run-up to Mayor Dick Murphy's State of the City address, San Diego City Attorney Michael Aguirre advises city officials to seek major pension benefit rollbacks in upcoming contract talks with municipal labor unions.
Aguirre's memo says that as of June 2003, actuary of the San Diego City Employees Retirement System estimated the total value of retroactive benefit increases at $476.3 million, about 40 percent of the pension system's $1.2 billion deficit.
The memo said case law indicates that efforts to roll back existing benefits for current employees will pose "a difficult challenge, but it predicted the courts will be receptive to attempts to re-establish financial stability given the city's fiscal troubles.

Advice Memo - Terra Movers, Inc., Case 21-CA-30519   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
Aguirre stated that he wanted to be honest and "up-front" with the Employer and told him about his complaint to the Navy Department about the pension-vesting schedule.
Aguirre alleges that the Employer advertised job vacancies in October 1994, that he called the Employer and asked to be rehired into his old position, and that the Employer stated that it would not rehire him, especially after he had sent letters to various government agencies complaining about the pension plan provisions.
Hence, since the heart of Aguirre's dispute with his Employer concerned a contractual term, Aguirre was engaging in protected concerted activity when he sought information about the lawfulness of that provision.

Aguirre has issued opinions stating that the city charter orders that the same 10-year standard for vesting pension benefits must be applied to elected officials too, regardless of a 1971 council decision to ease the requirement.
Aguirre argues that these benefits were created illegally because money was not set aside to pay for the increases and that pension trustees that approved the upgrades had a conflict of interest because they were also beneficiaries.
Aguirre has begun a campaign asking city workers to voluntarily rework a number of benefits that he believes were illegally granted on a number of grounds in the past decade.

Aguirre considers certain benefits enhancements approved in 1996 and 2002 to be illegal because they were granted without being funded, contributing to San Diego's mounting $1.4 billion pension debt.
Among the benefits Aguirre asserts were granted illegally was the purchase of service credits, which allowed city employees to buy up to five years of credit towards their retirement without having to work for them.
Aguirre has said that 2,900 city employees purchased about 13,000 years of pension service credits, worth about $120 million, at a discount while the city could not afford to pay for them.

Aguirre’s initial announcement focused on another Vortmann memo dated Feb. 18, 2002, which proved the committee failed to include newly available information about the city pension system under-funding in its 2002 report.
Aguirre argues that if that information had been provided, the City Council may not have agreed to increase employee benefits, one of several agreements that resulted in the city’s current pension under-funding.
To some, Vortmann’s memo provides evidence that the committee, comprising volunteer citizens and touted by the mayor from its inception as “independent,” was actually pressured to understate the severity of its findings.

Aguirre said Monday that FBI agents, through a subpoena, obtained a 2002 memo signed by Ewell that defended the council's decision to boost retirement benefits over the objections of then-pension board trustee Diann Shipione.
Although Ewell signed the memo, it was prepared by Cathy Lexin, a former pension board trustee who is fighting charges that she and five others violated state conflict-of-interest laws.
But Aguirre said there was clear evidence at the time that the benefit boost was full of irregularities, and he believes Ewell was involved in a conspiracy to cover them up.

None would speak about the case on the record, but a July 1991 memo from the SEC investigators to their boss reveals that they were having difficulty securing documents from Bush, who was holding many items back, saying they were private correspondence between him and his lawyer.
Michael Aguirre, a California securities lawyer who filed the original Freedom of Information request that led to the release of some of the documents, said he is astonished that the SEC did not investigate the rights offering.
Thus, Aguirre said, it is ''imperative'' that Bush allow the buyer of his stock to be identified because that would clarify whether Bush knew the buyer and conveyed inside information to the buyer.
