IGN: Memoirs of a Geisha Review
December 9, 2005- In terms of the new film Memoirs of a Geisha, let's get all of the biases out of the way from the get-go: I have never read the book upon which the film is based.
But for the casual viewer, Memoirs of a Geisha may prove to be a terrific entry point for the beautiful and expansive world of Asian cinema.
Despite the characters' many claims that the women are definitively not prostitutes, the film's centerpiece involved auctioning Sayuri's virginity to the highest bidder; and contrary to claims that she is a formidable agent of her own destiny, Sayuri seems painfully unaware of the machinations of her colleagues and adversaries throughout the entire film.

Movie Review for Memoirs of a Geisha
Memoirs of a Geisha was adapted from the novel of the same title by Arthur Golden, and based in part upon the life story of an actual geisha who ended up suing Golden for revealing her identity in the book.
Since what geishas do or don't do behind closed doors is open to speculation, let's leave the whore vs. walking work of art question to the historians and get on with the film.
Other than proving that you can make a lousy movie about Japan using Chinese actors and American money, Memoirs of a Geisha seems bent on showing that geishas, who have pretty much died out, are not prostitutes.

I've yet to hear anything from Munich, but until such time, Memoirs of a Geisha is an easy pick for one of the best scores of 2005.
Starring a pan-Asian cast including Zhang Ziyi, Ken Watanabe and Michelle Yeoh, the film follows the story of Sayuri (Ziyi), an impoverished Japanese girl who is sold by her parents and taken to the Hanamachi.

 Review: Memoirs of a Geisha
Memoirs of a Geisha is worthwhile on many levels, although it lacks the depth of feeling that would have elevated it from a good movie to a romance for the ages.
Emotionally, although Memoirs of a Geisha is not inert, it lacks the ability to wrench the viewer.
There's no doubting that Memoirs of a Geisha is a lush motion picture, and it has much to recommend it, but this will not go down as one of the great screen romances of the 2000s.

Memoirs of a Geisha was never primed to be a film that burns down the house.

 Memoirs of a Geisha (2005)
Lavish cinematography means 'Memoirs of a Geisha' is never anything less than visually beautiful, and it's hard to think of how any other movie could beat it to an Oscar in this department come March next year.
The very word "geisha" means artist and to be a geisha is to be judged as a moving work of art.
However, the true merit of the film lies in the fact that its sumptuous style does not outweigh substance, something particularly thankful given that such an imbalance was so unfortunately true of House of Flying Daggers, the last major release to star Ziyi Zhang.

China's decision to ban the film Memoirs of a Geisha this week from local cinemas has generated disapproving headlines in the foreign press about the chokehold of communist censorship.
Outside of China, the casting of two Chinese in Japanese roles was seen as merely eccentric and perhaps an effort to give the film a quirky marketing twist.
That seems easy to answer – because of the casting of two of China's most famous actors, Zhang Ziyi and Gong Li, as geishas in lead roles.

Citing Public Sentiment, China Cancels Release of 'Geisha' - New York Times
According to film industry officials who were briefed on the Chinese government's decision this week, the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television canceled the film's scheduled Feb. 9 release after reviewing the Chinese script of "Memoirs of a Geisha," overturning an earlier decision to approve the film.
Film industry officials and the Chinese state media said last week that government officials were worried that the public could be outraged by seeing three of the Chinese-language world's leading actresses portraying Japanese geishas.
The decision is a big setback for Sony Pictures, which planned to distribute the Columbia Pictures film here, as well as for the film's Chinese stars, Ziyi Zhang and Gong Li, and Michelle Yeoh, a Malaysian-born actress also popular for her roles in China.
