Memorial Stadium was built in 1923 as a memorial to Illinois men and women who gave their lives for their country during World War I. Their names appear on 200 columns that support the east and west sides of the stadium.
The stadium was dedicated officially October 18, 1924, a day that Illinois not only defeated Michigan, 39-14, for a Homecoming victory, but Harold "Red" Grange accounted for six touchdowns in what remains as the single greatest performance in Memorial Stadium history.
The Memorial Stadium practice dome, more commonly known as "The Bubble," was inflated for the first time in December 1985, and the Fighting Illini's new locker room facilities opened before the 1986 season.

Memorial Stadium plans to begin a wide-scale renovation of Memorial Stadium continue to take shape although no formal approval from the Board of Trustees has been given.
The proposed Memorial Stadium renovations include: a 19,000-square foot addition to the club space with private restrooms and concession facilities; a mezzanine level in the Great Hall on the stadium's east side; 49 climate-controlled corporate or privately sponsored suites; and improvements to the press box, concession area and bathroom facilities.
While most stadiums build on to the outside of their facilities to reduce costs, the University plans on building inside of the stadium to preserve the stadium's overall character, Hood said.

CHAMPAIGN -- Memorial Stadium, the home of Illini football, looks much the same as it did when it was dedicated in 1924 in memory of those who died in World War I. But while the building is structurally sound, the stadium is showing its age, and fans' expectations have changed.
All of the new work would be done within the current stadium footprint, said Tim Cahill, an architect with HNTB Architecture Inc., which has designed several of the projects at other Big Ten schools.
Few changes are planned on the east side of the stadium, except for a new mezzanine at the front of the balcony and a renovated concourse, according to HNTB's plan.
