Memorial received university status in 1949 in one of the first acts of the legislature in the newly created Canadian Province of Newfoundland.

It evolved from Memorial U College, founded in 1925 as a memorial to Newfoundlanders killed in World War I. It gained university status in 1949 and moved to a new campus in the city in 1961.
At Memorial University's Sir Wilfred Grenfell College campus in Corner Brook, Ignatius Rumboldt established a college/community choir during his term as director of music 1975-7.
Memorial University's Dept of Folklore was founded by Herbert Halpert in 1968 and was directed by him until 1973.

Memorial was a young university poised for growth in student enrolment, academic programs, and physical expansion and awaiting the promised construction of a new, larger campus to be built on the outskirts of the city on Elizabeth Avenue.
Born in Winnipeg, the 30 year-old Harvey was a history graduate of the University of Minnesota and of the University of London.
Memorial was fortunate in having a number of determined academics, supported by an enthusiastic and sympathetic president in Raymond Gushue, who formulated a plan of action consisting of document acquisition, preservation and cataloguing, along with the institution of necessary courses and recruitment of staff and students to make the program successful.

Memorial University College (MUC) officially opened on 15 September 1925, and began to offer the first two years of university training in the arts and sciences.
The cordial relationships that had been cultivated by the Council of Higher Education with universities elsewhere were continued and expanded by MUC, which increased its network of official and unofficial university affiliations.
Universities in the Maritime Provinces were the principal destination of MUC graduates, but many went to other parts of Canada, and to the United States and Great Britain.

 Memorial University to re-examine Chandra case
The president of Memorial University of Newfoundland and Labrador says the institution will re-examine how it responded to allegations that one of its former professors used fraudulent research.
The university has been reacting to a CBC series about the former professor, called The Secret Life of Dr. Ranjit Chandra, which ran on The National three nights last week.
Memorial said it feels unfairly portrayed in how it handled the issue, however, university president Axel Meisen says the series has prompted him to re-examine the case.

The Lincoln Memorial University men’s golf team finished third in the LMU Fall Invitational Golf Tournament held Monday and Tuesday at Woodlake Golf Club in Tazewell, Tennessee.
