Topic: Memories (film)

Memories (film) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Memories (also Otomo Katsushiro's Memories) is a 1995 anime based on three manga by artist/director Otomo Katsuhiro.
In a walled city perpetually at war, everyone's lives and livelihood depend upon maintaining and firing the cannons: millions of cannons, ranging from cannons the size of the Seagram Tower to cannons the size of a bottle of Seagram's.
During the course of the film, the city is surrounded in fog and the "enemy city" is never shown, leading the viewer to wonder if there really is an enemy at all, or if the walled city is simply firing into the clouds to perpetuate a war that has become its entire means of economy.

Of all the dozens of films produced in Cuba through Castro's insistence on the importance of the cinema, Memories of Underdevelopment is the most sophisticated.
Memories is one of the best films ever made about the sceptical individual's place in the march of history.
Memories was Alea's fifth film, and probably his most famous, though at least three others received international attention.

 memories of underdevelopment
At the end of the film he looks down on the mobilization for the missile crisis, in which the whole of Havana is unified in the face of impending destruction.
In MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT the contrast between the long documentary insert, seemingly unrelated to the narrative, and the narrative part of the film serves to reinforce the theme of Sergio's divorce from the political, yet the documentary footage also asserts the inescapable reality of that sphere.
The commentary states, "The truth of the group is in the murderer." Alea uses this sequence in the film to emphasize the consequences of a false consciousness among the bourgeoisie, especially as related to Sergio, who thinks he is truly separate from political action.

 2009 Lost Memories (KOREA 2002)
The plot details of 2009 Lost Memories are extremely involved, and unfold over the course of the film's two hour-plus running time.
To say that the film fails due to its pedestrian ambitions would be unfair.
That 2009 Lost Memories ends up predictably is a fault of the monster commercial machine, which drives the film industry but also hampers it artistically.

"Memories of Murder" is a constantly deceptive detective story in which bad cops who think they're doing good work look for a serial killer in all the wrong places.
In a film that starts out feeling like a standard high-intensity thriller, we quickly sense that something is a little haywire.
"Memories of Murder" is a masterpiece of shifting certainties, unreliable characters and deadly dark humor.

 Cult Memories
Cult films usually have an element of unease - anarchy, transgressing certain taboos; they are almost always excessive and camp and speak to the counterculture.
The whole film was so monochromatic that nobody, not even a crew member, wore a single color on the set - hypnotically beautiful, shrouded in fog, luminous and incandescent, with all the elements of a religious manifestation.
Since horror films are acted out on the dark playground of the subconscious, they are often at their best when as illogical as our unfettered minds...

Allen is Sandy Bates, a film director who turns from knockabout comedy to confessional drama, loses the love of a mainstream audience and gains the respect of a cabal of cinephiles whom he despises.
Allen never seemed more indulgent, posturing, or physically repulsive - and yet all the film's many strengths lie in its anatomisation of this nasty display.
This is where the paranoia really set in, where the sole subject of Allen's cinema became - irremediably - Allen himself.
