After his Memphis Tams posted the worst record in all of pro basketball during the 1973-74 season, Charlie Finley refused to pay any more bills.
After four years of futility, starting with the gradual demise of the Memphis Pros and ending with the debacle of the Tams, it seemed impossible that the Memphis ABA franchise could continue.
Then on March 28, 1975, Memphis beat Dr. J and the New York Nets 111-106 at the Mid-South Coliseum in front of 8,417 fans - the largest crowd ever to see the Sounds (and the largest Memphis ABA crowd in several years).

The Memphis Pros was the name of a franchise in the American Basketball Association.
He renamed it again to the Memphis Sounds and developed a new color scheme and logo, which were good enough that when the ABA became defunct and the copyrights on its properties were allowed to lapse, a minor league baseball team in Nashville adopted them and continues to use them to the present day.
Memphis would not host another professional basketball game until the NBA's Vancouver Grizzlies arrived in 2001.

Known by different names from 1970 to 1975 and playing primarily at the Mid-South Coliseum in Memphis, this team was one of the weakest links in the ABA, a diverse range of professional basketball teams that challenged the National Basketball Association (NBA) for professional basketball dominance during the 1970s.
The ABA first came to Memphis in 1970 when the failed New Orleans franchise, the New Orleans Buccaneers, moved to the Bluff City and became the Memphis Pros (1970-72).
The last year of major league professional basketball in Memphis was 1974-75, when former ABA commissioner Mike Storen ran the franchise as the Memphis Sounds and named Jack Mullaney as the coach.
