The Osprey "Men at Arms" titles are well known to many interested parties; plastic modellers, wargamers, uniform collectors, and those with a general interest in history.
As with most of the Men At Arms titles, the titles are generally so broad that it is hard to grasp what the book is about without purchasing it first.
A Revised Edition of MAA 108 was released in 2000, updating the book and causing a slight adjustment to the name to bring it into line with other titles, now being known as 'British Infantry Equipments (2) 1908-2000'.

A Companion to Evelyn Waugh's Sword of Honour : Men at Arms : Introduction
Men at Arms is the first book of the sequence of three.
There are promising stepping stones already laid down in Men at Arms : he has met his wife Virginia again (and been rebuffed by her), his father is a rock of innocent sanity in his retirement apartment in Matchet, and several characters of some later importance - Trimmer and Blackhouse especially - have been introduced.
The effect is wholly laudable as the two men are thereby more easily differentiated, Trimmer losing any sense of a wide education or a nature either ironical or social, and so becoming less suitable as a companion for his fellow-officers.

Even then Edward was not disquieted and he sent a mere handful of knights to the prince's battle, saying, "Let the boy win his spurs." The left battle of the English, hitherto somewhat to the rear, moved up into line with the prince, and the French attack slackened.
By midnight the army of France was practically annihilated; 1542 men of gentle blood were left dead on the field and counted by Edward's heralds, the losses of the remainder are unknown.
Some fifty of the victors fell in the battle.

The War Room - Books, Men at Arms   (Site not responding. Last check: )
This concise study, concluding the author's series of five titles on the Prussian Army of 1792—1815, covers the staff; the reforms in tactical employment of all-arms brigades (which, contrary to received opinion, pre-dated the disasters of Jena and Auerstedt in 1806); the artillery and other technical troops; and regimental colours and standards.
At the time of the American Civil War, with two million men under arms, a US Army that in pre-war days had depended upon a minute number of technical troops now required virtually an army of specialists alone.
Special sharpshooters were recruited for skirmishing duty; men whose wounds would have led to their discharge in the past now found themselves guarding important posts in the Veteran Reserve Corps; and large numbers of civilians found themselves in uniform as members of the Telegraph or Hospital Corps.

The opening of Men at Arms sees new recruits Angua (a werewolf), Detritus and Cuddy joining the ranks, although being troll and dwarf, they are more likely to get into trouble fighting each other than they are solving crimes.
And there are crimes, there are a series of puzzling murders which seem to centre on the Assassins Guild, the difference being that these are non-sanctioned deaths, if you appreciate the distinction.
Men at Arms also features Gaspode, the small, scruffy dog who is also much more than he seems.

Apparently there’s something very important about his true lineage, although he’s unaware of it - though other influential people are not only aware of it but have it as part of their plan and are actively going around killing people in an attempt to make it work.

Men at Arms and the Sword of Honour trilogy of which it is the first part are in many respects comparable to Ford Maddox Ford's tetralogy Parade's End (Some Do Not, 1924; No More Parades, 1925; A Man Could Stand Up, 1926; The Last Post, 1928).
Both recount an English gentleman of the old school's encounter with war and its social consequences, and both take a realistic, un-romantic and extremely effective approach to expressing this in literary form.
