ScienceDaily: No Magic Tomato? Study Breaks Link Between Lycopene And Prostate Cancer Prevention
In their current study, the researchers followed over 28,000 men between the ages of 55 and 74, enrolled in the PLCO Trial, with no history of prostate cancer.
The men were initially screened through a PSA test and digital rectal exam, and were then followed through routine exams and screenings until first occurrence of prostate cancer, death or the end of the trial in 2001.
The researchers focused on non-Hispanic Caucasian men, as the small number of cases among other ethnic groups was statistically insignificant.

Encyclopedia :: encyclopedia : Function (mathematics)   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-25)
In mathematics, a function is a relation, such that each element of a set (the domain) is associated with a unique element of another (possibly the same) set (the codomain, not to be confused with the range).
As a mathematical term, "function" was coined by Leibniz in 1694, to describe a quantity related to a curve, such as a curve's slope or a specific point of a curve.
The notion of function as a rule for computing, rather than a special kind of relation, has been formalized in mathematical logic and theoretical computer science by means of several systems, including the lambda calculus, the theory of recursive functions and the Turing machine.

Bell wrote a book of biographical sketches titled Men of Mathematics, which is still in print.
He wrote numerous science fiction novels under the pseudonym John Taine, which were well received at the time of their publication, but have been largely forgotten now.

Men of Mathematics accessibly explains the major mathematics, from the geometry of the Greeks through Newton's calculus and on to the laws of probability, symbolic logic, and the fourth dimension.
Finally, Men of Mathematics is also a history of ideas, tracing the majestic development of mathematical thought from ancient times to the twentieth century.
Overall, this book is well worth reading for anyone with an interest in mathematics and/or the sciences in general--keeping in mind, of course, that the focus of the book is the lives of great mathematicians and not an in-depth study of their work.

Of course these are less straightforward criteria than Bell would have us believe; in mathematics, the importance of a man’s work is measured in general by the impressions of other men, for one thing, a fact which is built into the structure of mathematics and so is invisible to Bell.
In his lexicon, the men of mathematics are described as princes, masters, and gentlemen, but most often as geniuses.
In fact, the importance of the lone wolf to mathematical imagery is underscored by the fact that instead of publishing as a collective, they chose to publish under the solitary pseudonym Nicholas Bourbaki.

"Men of Mathematics" accessibly explains the major mathematics, from the geometry of the Greeks through Newton's calculus and on to the laws of probability, symbolic logic, and the fourth dimension.
More addition, the book goes beyond pure mathematics to present a series of engrossing biographies of the great mathematicians -- an extraordinary number of whom lived bizarre or unusual lives.
Finally, "Men of Mathematics" is also a history of ideas, tracing the majestic development of mathematical thought from ancient times to the twentieth century.

Men of Mathematics mirrors the development of mathematics in the form of some 25 biographies of prominent mathematicians, from the ancient Greeks to Georg Cantor.
It does not delve deeply into mathematics - it is well within the range of any bright high school student - yet it gives enough solid information and background to enable the reader to appreciate what the mathematicians were trying to achieve.
It is a book that makes mathematicians long gone come to life, and it shows how their accomplishments fit into history - not just the history of mathematics, but also more generally into the history of science and the history of European culture.

Prostate Cancer - Collagen Injections Tighten Up Urinary Control
This non-invasive approach may be a suitable alternative for men who are wary of surgery to correct their bladder problems, the researchers say.
After three years of follow-up, the researchers found that men who had their prostate removed and received the collagen injections had lowered their use of pads, and 17 percent of the men had achieved complete control over their bladder.
And side effects seem to be minimal—1.5 percent of the men in the study complained of an increase in their incontinence.

Bell’s approach to the history of mathematics was exciting, but he achieved that effect, in part, through fictionalization.
The author is a professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick in the U.K. The imaginary recipient of his letters is named Meg — a nice departure from the longstanding and rather self-reinforcing stereotype of math as a man’s field.
But Bell’s men of mathematics were, on the whole, geniuses of the purest vintage.

Prostate Cancer - Waiting to Treat Prostate Cancer?
But a new study seems to indicate that even older men with prostate cancer live longer when their cancer is treated.
Looking at almost 50,000 men from a Medicare registry who were diagnosed with prostate cancer after 1990, Wong noted at a meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology that over 14,500 chose "watchful waiting" and over 34,000 chose to pursue treatment in the form of surgery or radiation.
Older men are more likely to die with prostate cancer than from it, so there is less reason to go through treatment.
