  bolchazy.com: Latin — Plautus' Menaechmi
Plautus' Menaechmi, edited by Gilbert Lawall and Betty Nye Quinn and now in its second edition, sets out to make Plautus attainable and enjoyable for sixth formers and firstyear undergraduates.
The format is admirable: vocabularies face the text, which is interrupted from time to time to admit stage directions, and notes on language and on essential background are placed with the vocabulary, while occasional questions about the play and about wider issues of social life (e.g.

Menaechmi - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Menaechmi is a play about mistaken identity, involving a set of twins, Menaechmus of Epidamnus and Menaechmus of Syracuse.
A similar line of influence was Carlo Goldoni's 1747 play I due gemelli veneziani ("The two Venetian twins"), adapted as The Venetian Twins in 1979 by Nick Enright with music by Terence Clarke.
In 2003, Menaechmi was performed in English and Latin by the Harvard Classical Club at Agassiz Theater, in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Shakespeare's Sources for Comedy of Errors
The plot of Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors was taken from the play The Menaechmi, written by the ancient Roman dramatist, Plautus.
In The Comedy of Errors, the main plot is very similar to the work of Plautus, but Shakespeare deviates from his source by adding a second set of twins, and excluding three of the main characters.
In Plautus, only one of the twin heroes is attended by his slave, and there is no suggestion of the delightful absurdity of a second pair of identical twins, attendant upon the first.

Another Roman convention is the use of identical twins for comic effect; the play The Twin Menaechmi likely employed masks as the Greeks did in Dionysian festivals.
As Plautus’s last surviving work, The Twin Menaechmi is about mistaken identity.
Terence produced six polished and carefully structured plays in the time spanning 190-159 B.C. Seneca wrote tragedies that are well known to the Elizabethan writers, such as Marlowe and Shakespeare.

 Bryn Mawr Classical Review 95.10.15
It is characteristic of G. to evaluate the Menaechmi in light of Plautus' other works (as he rightly says on p.
24): "[The Menaechmi] was always a play of pure situation, not of character, and as such is certainly not Menandrian." Even if G.'s assertions are correct, his boldness gives the impression that we understand ancient comedy and its development better than we do.
The plot of the Menaechmi may be error-filled, but this fine book is a model of correctness.

The Comedy of Errors Summary & Essays - William Shakespeare
The Comedy of Errors is considered one of Shakespeare's earliest plays, possibly his first comedy and certainly his shortest play, written sometime between 1589 and 1594, although it was not printed until 1623.
The primary source of the play is the Menaechmi of Plautus, a Roman comic playwright, but Shakespeare also borrowed from Plautus's Amphitruo.
From the Menaechmi Shakespeare took his central plot, which revolves around "errors," or mistaken identity, involving identical twin brothers.

Bates College | 05-05-99 THEATER AT BATES TO STAGE "THE TWIN MENAECHMI"   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-03)
LEWISTON, Maine -- Theater at Bates will stage four performances of Platus' timeless comedy "The Twin Menaechmi" at Bates College Thursday, Friday and Saturday, May 13, 14 and 15 at 8 p.m., and Sunday, May 16 at 2 p.m.
"The Twin Menaechmi," a paradigm for Shakespeare's "Comedy of Errors" and Sondheim's Broadway musical "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum," is a modern twist on the Greek comedy about the mix-up of two identical twins.
Separated from each other at the age of seven, one twin has spent his life seeking his lost brother who has lived a lavish life on the Island of Epidamnus.

Plautus' comedy Menaechmi was the main inspiration for Shakespeare's The Comedy of Errors.
In this edition Dr. Gratwick provides a newly constituted text, a commentary for students giving help with language and context, and an introduction that sheds new light on the interpretation of the play and on Plautus' place in the development of European comedy.

These five new translations, two by Douglass Parker ("Double Bind" [Menaechmi] and "Wild, Wild Women" [Bacchides]) and three by Deena Berg ("Major Blowhard" [Miles Gloriosus], Brothers, Hecyra), take to its logical, lively conclusion the long-held but oft-ignored reality that Plautus and Terence were writers for the stage.
Parker's detailed handling of the senex's canticum in Menaechmi (153-4), one of the shiniest nuggets in the book, is pure choreography.
Entrances give opportunities for character description: "Diddley [Peniculus in Menaechmi] enters from town (stage left).

Compare Contrast Errors Plautus Menaechmi Essays -- Shakespeare's Comedy of Errors and Plautus' Menaechmi and Amphitruo
While Menaechmi is the most frequently cited classical source for Errors, Plautus' Amphitruo is just as relevant an influence; Shakespeare's treatment of identity and its fragility is derived from this latter work.
Of course, there are many other structural and thematic resonances between the three texts: each of the plays, to varying degrees, deal with the issues of identity, violence and slavery, while displaying a keen awareness of aspects of performativity, specifically the figure of the playwright, and the role of th...
