  Disasters at Sea: The Loss of the Troopship Mendi
The 4230 GRT Mendi was 370 ft long with a beam of 46 ft. She served on the Liverpool to West Africa run until chartered by the British Government in 1916.
There are numerous Mendi references in South Africa, The Mendi Memorial, which is situated in Mendi Road, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, was erected "In memory of the servicemen who lost their lives at sea when the troopship S.S. Mendi foundered near St. Catherine's Point on the Isle of Wight".
SAS Mendi in PE On 23 August 2004, HMS Nottingham, representing the Royal Navy and SAS Mendi rendezvoused at the site of the wreck and laid wreaths in remembrance of those who lost their lives for their country and the allied forces.

From Mendi, the media group was flown to Nipa by helicopter to meet with 17 councillors from 31 council wards from the Huli area, and the local people who openly expressed their disappointment with the state of affairs, at the meeting at the Nipa field.
