Meneldil - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-07)
Meneldil (S.A. 158) is a fictional character in J.
He was the son and fourth child of Anárion, and was recorded as being the last man born in Númenor before the downfall.
This was reinforced by the Stewards Pelendur and Denethor who felt it was their right as the House of Anárion to not to bow down to the legitimate and unbroken line Isildur which had lost its power and dignity.

 Meneldil - Tolkien Gateway
Of Meneldil's life before the War of the Last Alliance we know almost nothing, but it is possible to deduce some of the most important incidents in that time.
We are told that Meneldil was notdisappointed to see the High King and his sons leave for the North, and that he hoped to rule Gondor himself for a long time.
Meneldil ruled in Gondor for one hundred and fifty-six years, and was succeeded by his son Cemendur.

 Encyclopedia of Arda: Meneldil
We know that Meneldil was a shrewd and intelligent man, and it seems more than plausible that he simply invented this story of Isildur's 'relinquishing' Gondor to his rule.
According to that alternative version of events, Meneldil was the last Man to be born in Númenor before it was destroyed the following year, but this story seems to have been abandoned.
Perhaps the fact that Meneldil was elder than any of these (he was probably 143 at the time) swayed Isildur's choice.

He was born in Númenor and brought to Middle-earth with his family escaping the Fall.
After the Last Alliance where both Elendil and Anárion fell in battle, Isildur inherited the High Kingship and placed the rule of Gondor in the hands of Meneldil.
It was after this visit to Gondor that Isildur died in the disaster of the Gladden Fields, returning from Osgiliath to Arnor.

Meneldil here employs the Sindarin term bar-en-lúthas, which may refer to the disciples of a certain „way" as a whole, but also can mean a specific order of mages, like the Nólehildi from ICE's Arnor: The People sourcebook.
Due to the lack of surviving documents, also the presence of similar organizations already in Second Age Númenor cannot really be ruled out; however, at least Meneldil would seem to have had no knowledge of their existence.
While the three rings of the Elven kings seem to have possessed powers not exclusively related to their respective elements, they indeed provide one of the best indications that Tolkien himself might have thought of an elemental background for at least some of the magic he describes in his writings.

Meneldil, as steward, sat in a plain stone seat at the foot of the dais.

Technically both Gondor and Armor should have fallen under his rule, but by the time he was of age his father's nephew Meneldil was firmly in charge of the south.

It seems that roads don't cross the rivers, but naval trade (with ports) works perfectly.
Thats a very good discovery Meneldil, it creates new possibilities like more complex naval trade, its a bit unpolished with the battle maps and roads not working, but still a nice little tool.

Howsabout we settle for Middle-earth -- the hodge-podge of various historical eras with a side of northern European mythology -- and call it a day.
I'd completely forgotten the Atlantis myth implications, but then again all this cataclysm stuff is very eastern mediterranean anyway (biblical floods, gilgamesh etc) but AFAIK I don't remember any Egyptian disaster myths.
