Council of Elrond :: Lord of the Rings News and Information
Meneltarma, The Pillar of Heaven, was the mountain found at the center of Númenor.
At the southern foot of Meneltarma, between the ridges running towards Hyarnustar and Hyarrostar was found the Valley of Noirinan where the tombs of the rulers of Númenor were located.
Meneltarma was too steep to be scaled, but a spiral road that began on the ridge running towards Hyarnustar was used to reach the summit.

Meneltarma, The - Places - Research Library - Henneth Annûn
The base of the Meneltarma sloped gently into the surrounding plain, but it extended, after the fashion of roots, five long low ridges outwards in the direction of the five promontories of the land; and these were called Tarmasundar, the Roots of the Pillar.
For the Meneltarma was utterly deserted in those days; and though not even Sauron dared to defile the high place, yet the King would let no man, upon pain of death, ascend to it, not even those of the Faithful who kept Ilúvatar in their hearts.
Too late she strove to ascend the steep ways of the Meneltarma to the holy place; for the waters overtook her, and her cry was lost in the roaring of the wind.

At Meneltarma no weapon or tool had ever been borne and only the Kings and Queens were alloved to speak there and it is said that no-one would have dared to speak there if alloved because of the holy spirit of silence there.
It is also told that if anyone approached the summit, maybe to try to descry the light of Avallónë, at once three eagles would descend and land on three rocks at the Western end unless in time of the Three Prayers.

Elros and his people, the Edain, set sail over Sea, and guided by the Star of Eärendil[?] came to the great Isle of Elenna[?], westernmost of all Mortal lands.
There was a tall mountain in the midst of Elenna, the Meneltarma, and from its summit the farsighted could descry the white tower of the Haven of the Eldar[?] in Eressëa[?].
Thence the Eldar came to the Edain and enriched them with knowledge and many gifts; but one command had been laid upon the Numenoreans, the Ban of the Valar[?]: they were forbidden to sail west out of sight of their own shores or to attempt to set foot on the Undying Lands.

The tradition in Númenor was that every year, the king or queen would go to the top of Meneltarma three times only, to speak prayers to Eru, for there stood his Hallow, the only temple in all of Númenor.
The prayers spoken at Autumn's end were prayers of thanksgiving to Eru; the king or queen would ascend the mountain, followed by their people, silent - for none could speak atop Meneltarma save the King - and clothed only in white.
The Erukyermë was held in spring, and translates literally as "Prayer to Eru." At this time prayers were spoken by the king or queen of Númenor atop the Pillar of the Heavens, Meneltarma, which they ascended on foot and followed by their people.

Though the lower slopes of the mountain were gentle and grass-covered, it grew ever steeper, and towards the summit it could not be scaled; but a winding spiral road was made upon it, beginning at its foot upon the south, and ending below the lip of the summit upon the north.

 Meneltarma − Ardapedia
