		Goodbye to Meng Haoran at Yellow Crane Tower is a straightforward description of a farewell setting: it is early spring (the third month) and the flowers are in bloom, enveloping the place like a thick mist.
		Li Bai, perhaps with a group of friends, were bidding farewell to Meng Haoran at the tower, or Li Bai could have climbed up the tower for a better view of Meng sailing in a boat down the river.
		In his and his wife's translation of Hung Lou Meng, for instance, the English prose text is detailed, accurate and engaging, but many of the embedded poems in the Hung Lou novel are rendered indifferently.

		A poem by eighth-century Chinese poet Meng Hao-jan speaks of "depths of quiet" that suggest more than silence or equanimity.
		Meng was a hermit, and like most hermits, the visit to or by a kindred spirit could be satisfying but also disturbing.

		Less well known are Ts'ien Ts'i (or Qian Qi), the author of the second song, 'Der Einsame im Herbst' (The Lonely One in Autumn), and Mong-Kao-Jèn (or Meng Hao-ran) and Wang-Wei, two friends whose poems were combined and set to music in the final 'Abschied' (The Farewell).
		Mahler made these last two texts, which express the basic 'message' of the work, into something entirely his own, not hesitating to add to them a number of lines of his own invention.

		Jason Lee (MSE ME ‘98, MEng Manufacturing) accepted an 18-month appointment as executive director for the Detroit Area Pre-College Engineering Program via the Ford Motor Company Executive Loan program.
		He finished ninth in the second heat of the semifinal 1,500-meter and missed qualifying for the final.
