Mengistu Haile Mariam - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Mengistu Haile Mariam (born 1937) was the head of state of Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991.
Mengistu was one of a committee of low ranking officers and enlisted soldiers known as the Derg who in 1974 overthrew Emperor Haile Selassie, whose regime had lost public confidence following a BBC-produced documentary by Jonathan Dimbleby highlighting a devastating famine in Wollo province.
Mengistu's government was faced with enormous difficulties throughout the 1980s in the form of droughts, widespread famine (notably the Ethiopian famine of 1984 - 1985) and insurrections, particularly in the northern regions of Tigray and Eritrea.

 "Era of Impersonal Politics"
Haile Selassie, himself, was the very image of that bureaucracy and an egomaniac of "divine" proportions and tremendous wealth in a land of utter scarcity.
Haile-Selassie's unlikely successor, Colonel Mengistu Haile-Mariam, was himself involved in a number of shootouts to establish and protect his own dictatorship over the democratic ideals of the Ethiopian Revolution of the 1970s.
By establishing his personal dictatorship, Mengistu was able to stop the democratic tide of the revolution and dam the popular energy that could have embarked on the path of meaningful development and change.

In the hierarchy of leftist monsters of the 20th century, Mengistu Haile Mariam, the Communist leader of Ethiopia from 1977 to 1991, is often lost.
Mengistu, instead of attempting to alter the national economic infrastructure to aid the dying thousands, went on to blame the West for the famine, suggesting that aid agencies avoided Ethiopia for political reasons.
Mengistu reportedly flew into a rage, and demanded that the army halt its retreat, but surprisingly, he was overruled by his aides and commanders, clearly indicating his deteriorating position.

In 1930, Haile Selassie was crowned Emperor of Ethiopia and established a more modern state by creating a structured, central bureaucracy, a judicial system with codified laws, and a constitution (IRBDC Apr. 1990, 11).
The Emperor's unresponsiveness to the economic development of the country and the political needs of his people, specifically his methods of dealing with (and concealing) the widespread famine that plagued the nation in the 50s, 60s, and 70s, is what most scholars believe ultimately led to his downfall.
In February 1977, Mengistu Haile Mariam arranged the execution of General Teferi along with six other senior members of the government, and publicly took supreme power after their deaths.
