Menidi, also known as Acharnai, is a run-down district of 78,000 northeast of Athens that was badly hit five years ago by a 5.9 Richter earthquake that killed 100 people and left 50,000 homeless in Attica.
The ministry is set to relocate to the village, along with the national geological studies institute (IGME), once the necessary work is completed by November 2005.
This leaves labour ministry employees roughly a year to debate the move to Menidi, which some may oppose, as the area is one of Athens' less savoury districts.

The chance to remodel already built areas is definitely lost, since the Menidi solution prevailed despite the high risk of the city's expansion towards the mountainside of Parnitha (the most important woodland of Attica), exactly as it had happened before in the case of Imitos and Penteli mountains.
