		The amount of water in the lakes is naturally variable, filling during high flows in the Darling River and receding to form a series of pools in dry conditions.

		When they reached Menindee on October 12, Burke split the group, taking eight men including himself and a smaller amount of equipment, with plans to push on quickly to Coopers Creek and then wait for the others to catch up.
		In 1860 Coopers Creek was the edge of the land that had been explored by Europeans; the river having been visited by Captain Charles Sturt in 1845 and Augustus Charles Gregory in 1858.
		He was supposed to bring supplies up from Menindee to Coopers Creek, but a lack of money and too few pack animals to carry the supplies meant he had not set out until the end of January.

		Since living in Menindee in the 1990’s I have always had an interest in the Menindee Cemetery and the history of the pioneers that rest there.
		It is hard to imagine that these people carried water up the steep banks of the river in buckets with a yolk across their shoulders but their greatest hardship must have been burying seven of their ten children.

		On the journey from Kornpany to the Darling at Bilbarka, one of the camels, with a load of over 200kg, fell and according to Landells, dislocated its shoulder.
		The camel, one of Coppins' beasts was left on the Darling at Bilbarka and therefore 25 or 26 camels reached Menindee.
		In his first despatch, Wright reported 9 camels were left behind, but in his second despatch he reported leaving Pamamaroo for Bulloo with 10 camels.
