Menippus, of Gadara in Coele-Syria, Greek cynic and satirist, lived during the 3rd century BC.
One of the dialogues attributed to Lucian, his avowed imitator, who frequently mentions him, is called Menippus.
But this dialogue is regarded with suspicion, and since the sub-title ("The Oracle of the Dead") resembles that of a work ascribed to Menippus by Diogenes Laërtius, it has been suggested that it is really the work of Menippus himself, or at any rate imitated from his Necromancy by the author, whether Lucian.

Menippus, an adherent of the Cynic School of philosophy, was born at Sinope in Asia Minor, but his family was originally from Gadara, in Palestine.
Menippus was the author of several works, now completely lost; they satirized the follies of human kind, especially of philosophers, in a sarcastic tone Among other productions, he wrote a piece entitled "The Sale of Diogenes," and another called "Necromancy".
It is suggested that the Necromancy inspired an imitator of Lucian to compose the "Menippus, or Oracle of the Dead," which is found among the works of the native of Samosata.

Menippus by VELÁZQUEZ, Diego Rodriguez de Silva y
The satirical tradition had spread throughout Europe via the humanists, and Velázquez's knowledge of it is evident in his use of ideal types in portraits of the Cynic philosopher Menippus and the Greek composer of animal fables Aesop, possibly painted for the hunting lodge Torre de la Parada, near the Buen Retiro Palace.
Aesop had, during Classical antiquity, been seen in conjunction with the Seven Sages; Menippus was known as a castigator of hack philosophers, whom he satirised in different literary genres.
The two portraits of philosophers, together with the portraits of fools and dwarfs, were intended to warn the king not to lose touch with the common people and their wisdom.

Menippus invented a genre that was famous for having been a farrago of prose and poetry, later characterised as ŒMenippean satire¹.
The surviving life of Menippus by Diogenes Laertius (VI 99-101) is the usual muddled farrago of sources, mostly drawn from an untrustworthy biography by Hermippus of Smyrna ‹ and an inexact compendium of philosophers by Diocles of Magnesia.19 Scholars have subsequently been mislead as to precisely when Menippus lived.
Menippus' own alleged descent into the world of the Dead, or ŒRaising of the Spirits of the Dead¹ (Nekuia), was composed in order to pour scorn on the pride of the living.39 However, this whole scenario, so associated with Menippus in the satires of Lucian, seems to have been provoked by an especially Gadarene phenomenon.
