Menominee continued to grow as a lumber port, and with the establishment of a post office in 1863 and the arrival of the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad in 1871, the town was really on the map.
While the Range was considerably closer to the Menominee harbor, the presence of ore docks in Escanaba since 1863, and the pre-existing infrastructure to handle the ore weighed heavily in the decision to bypass Menominee as the ore shipping point for the ore being excavated at the Range.
The town of Menominee continued to reap the benefits of the Range, and as a result significant harbor improvements were undertaken in the 1920's, At their completion in 1927, a prefabricated octagonal cast iron tower was delivered by vessel, and lowered onto the pier.

The Menominee County segment was completed in 1865; local interests soon began pressing for a bridge here to replace the existing ferry service across the Menominee River.
Finally, in March 1927 Menominee voters approved the middle bridge (their share of which would now be paid completely by federal and state funds) and a bond issue for a new drawbridge.
The Michigan highway department delineated plans for the new bridge and awarded a contract for its construction to G.R. Meyer and Sons of Oshkosh, Wisconsin.

The Menominee River Area of Concern (AOC) includes the lower 4.8 km of the river from the Upper Scott Paper Company (Wisconsin) Dam to the river's mouth and approximately 5 km north and south of the mouth along the adjacent shoreline of Green Bay.
The Menominee River was sampled in 1993-1995 as part of the tributary monitoring portion of the Lake Michigan Mass Balance Modeling project.
The City of Menominee is in compliance with its National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit combined sewer overflow (CSO) separation schedule, and with the 1990 Consent Agreement with the U.S. EPA for corrective action on its CSO/wet weather discharges at outfall #8 was eliminated in 1992.
