Mental substance - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mental substance can refer to the concept held by dualists and idealists, that minds are made-up of non-physical substance.
This is opposed to the materialists, who hold that what we normally think of as mental substance is ultimately physical matter (i.e., brains).
Gottfried Leibniz, belonging to the generation immediately after Descartes, held the position that the mental world was built up by monads, mental objects that are not part of the physical world.

SAMHSA Report to Congress - 2002- Executive Summary   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Substance abuse and mental health treatment providers well recognize that individuals with co-occurring disorders present complicated, chronic, interrelated conditions that often require solutions that are personalized to the specific set of symptoms, level of severity, and other psychosocial and environmental factors.
Substance Abuse Research: In a similar manner, there is a growing literature in the alcohol, nicotine, and drug abuse research fields - using well controlled studies that have evaluated specific interventions for specific subtypes of co-occurring disorders - that demonstrate improvements in outcomes.
For example, in the mental health setting, research on the use of medications to aid in the treatment of substance abuse disorders is lacking and needed (antabuse, naltrexone, buprenorphine, outpatient detoxification medications, nicotine replacement, etc.), and in the substance abuse treatment setting, research on program evaluations of integrated programs is needed.

 Mental Causation
Mental properties are alleged to have, not just one, but up to four features that make their causal relevance philosophically puzzling, no less problematic than mind-body interaction is for the substance dualist.
But the same sorts of problems arise whatever entities — events, substances, states of affairs, etc. — one takes to be the causal relata, and there is no need to take a stand on this particular issue (see causation: the metaphysics of, §1) for the purposes of this article.
For the property dualist, mental properties — and here the mental properties taking center stage are the phenomenal properties of conscious experience — are sui generis, not reducible to the dispositional or structural properties recognized by the physical sciences (see dualism).

Recent research has found that women admitted to substance abuse treatment with co-occurring psychiatric and substance use disorders were less likely to be in the labor force and less likely to have been referred for treatment by the criminal justice system than women admitted to substance abuse treatment with no psychiatric disorder.
For example, women with co-occurring SMI and a substance use disorder aged 18 to 25 were significantly less likely to perceive their health status as "excellent" (12 percent) compared to women in the same age category with a substance use disorder only (25 percent) (data not shown).
Women with co-occurring SMI and a substance use disorder also were more likely to have received treatment for a mental problem and/or specialty substance use treatment during the past year than their male counterparts (55 vs. 41 percent, respectively) (Figure 3).

Co-occurring mental and substance use disorders are typically not recognized or treated as a distinct problem among adolescents in TennCare or in publicly-funded treatment programs.
In order to determine the number of persons affected by both substance abuse/dependency and a serious emotional disorder, researchers calculated numbers for co-occurrence by identifying adolescents with one issue and then determined how many of them were affected by the other as well.
Based upon the youth’s reported level of alcohol or drug use and their consequences of substance use, the adolescents included in the study were classified as having substance abuse, substance dependence, or no/possible abuse.
