Menzies was born in Jeparit, a small town in the Wimmera region of western Victoria, the son of a storekeeper and state Member of Parliament of Scottish descent.
Menzies was first educated at a one-room school, then later at private schools in Ballarat and Melbourne, before studying law at the University of Melbourne.

Archibald Menzies was born in 1754 at Styx, an old branch house of the Menzies of Culdares near Perthshire in Scotland.
Menzies was delighted to be appointed surgeon to an expedition around Cape Horn to the North Pacific with the ship Prince of Wales, a voyage which took nearly three years.
Menzies had attained some fame as a botanist, and was appointed by the British Government in 1790 as naturalist to accompany Captain Vancouver in the Discovery on a voyage around the world.

Sir Robert Gordon Menzies (20 December 1894 – 14 May 1978), Australian politician, was the twelfth and longest-serving Prime Minister of Australia serving eighteen and a half years.
He was inordinately proud of his Highland ancestry -- his enduring nick-name, Ming, came from "Mingus," the Scots pronunciation of "Menzies," although it was also a reference to the evil emperor Ming The Merciless in the science fiction cartoon Flash Gordon.

British amateur historian Gavin Menzies received a book contract Tuesday for the publication of new theory that a Chinese admiral with a fleet of 100 ships beat Columbus to America and circumnavigated the globe almost a century before Magellan.
Menzies created a stir among historians last Friday when he presented the broad outlines of his theory, but not the fine points, during a lecture to the Royal Geographical Society in London.
Menzie's book will be published by Transworld Publishing and is expected out in hardback in the United States and the United Kingdom in September.

Having the middle name of Menzies (due to the Scottish tradition of receiving your mother's maiden name as your middle name) I am watching all this debate on what I thought was a fairly standard name with interest.
