 A Brief History of North Meols
Following the Norman invasion, the lands around North Meols were passed on to William De Coudrey, who’s son, Robert, built the first Manor House in the parish - now Meols Hall.
At this time the parish of North Meols consisted of a narrow strip of arable land and meadows, bounded by the sea to the west and north, and by Martin Mere to the east (Martin Mere was an expanse of water which has since been drained for use as agricultural land).
Some years ago a wharf was discovered below the entrance gates to Meols Hall, but a thorough excavation was not possible due to the proximity of the cottages.

The name Meols may not be familiar to many people, but the archaeological remains uncovered at this site on the north coast of the Wirral peninsula may be some of the most important evidence in Britain for prehistoric, Roman and medieval coastal settlement and trade.
One of the effects of this was a sudden acceleration in coastal erosion at Meols.
Meols was also near several important territorial boundaries throughout history - Cornovian and Brigantian in the Iron Age, Anglo-Saxon and Viking, and English and Welsh in later times.

Meols Drive, which began to be developed with housing in the 1890s, linked the two townships.
John Douglas in the capacity of his firm Douglas and Minshull may have actually designed some of the houses on Meols Drive as their work can be seen in both Hoylake Chapel and St Andrews Church.

 North Meols Local History
In between the sea and the great Martin Mere, the narrow strip of arable land that consituted North Meols passed on to William De Coudrey.
The son of William De Coudrey, Robert, built the first Manor House in the Parish, Meols Hall, but the area remained isolated and thus was very slow developing.
The cluster of cottages around the Church became known as Churchtown and was for many centuries the most populated area in North Meols.

On this promontory ancient Meols was no doubt situated; and the unsubstatial materials of which it was composed, like the hill of Dunwich, presented facilities for its destruction.

 North Meols to South Ribble
North of Southport, we still have North Meols - "nine miles long with the sea on one side and the mosses and marshes of Scarisbrick and Halsall fringing Martin Mere, on the other".
(Meols - Scandinavian for a "sand hill" with "North" to distinguish it from the earlier Norse settlement on the Wirral - pronounced "Mells".) The Anglo-Saxon chronicle recalls the conquest of North Meols in 923 by the English King and its transfer from Northumbria to Mercia.
Originally it extended so much into North Meols at one point it was separated from the sea only by a narrow neck of land.

With spacious grounds and plenty of room to move around and enjoy all the craft and trade stands, Meols Hall is an enjoyable experience.
There are also plenty of places to get something to eat and drink with plenty of seats which is sometimes difficult at shows such as this, so organisers deserve a pat on the back for catering.
