The family Mephitidae, which includes the skunks and stink badgers, is comprised of four extant genera (Mephitis, Conepatus, Spilogale and Mydaus) and 11 species.
Members of the family Mephitidae can be found in a variety of habitats, including relatively open forests, grasslands, agricultural areas, meadows, open fields, and rocky montane areas.
Members of the family Mephitidae are omnivorous, but a large proportion of their diet consists of animal material.

Mephitidae contains thirteen species in 2 subfamilies 4 genera.
The subfamily Mephitidae contains the genera Conepatus, Mephitis, and Spilogale, and the subfamily Melinae contains the stink badgers Mydaus.
Some authorities cite fewer species, combining all the spotted skunks except the pygmy spotted skunk under a single species, and combining some of the hog-nosed skunk species as well.

 Dragoo's Skunk Page
b) examined DNA sequence from a striped and a spotted skunk as well as other carnivores and concluded that skunks should be in their own family, the Mephitidae.
A more complete study of the family was performed by Dragoo and Honeycutt (1997) and included members of all three American (North, Central, and South) genera, in addition to the stink badger and the African zorilla.
We are striving to use the molecular data to better understand the evolution of morphological traits in carnivores.

Skunk - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Skunks are moderately small mammals, usually with fl-and-white fur, belonging to the family Mephitidae and to the order Carnivora.
Interestingly, skunks will not spray other skunks (with the exception of males in the mating season); though they fight over den space in autumn, they do so with tooth and claw.
The singular musk-spraying ability of the skunk has not escaped the attention of biologists: the names of the family and the most common genus (Mephitidae, Mephitis) mean "stench", and Spilogale putorius means "stinking spotted weasel".

As their mating season starts in February, skunks are again seen on the move.
Until recently, skunks were classified in the weasel family, Mustelidae, but now, based on molecular evidence, they are in their own separate family, Mephitidae.
The wildlife on exhibit are ambassadors for their species and we exhibit them in natural setting so visitors can appreciate their beauty, observe their behavior, and better understand their habitats.

While many authors have traditionally considered skunks a subfamily (Mephitinae) within Mustelidae, recent molecular evidence indicates that skunks do not lie within the mustelid group and should be recognized as a single family, Mephitidae (see Wozencraft in Wilson and Reeder 2005).
This endemic North American species was known only from Big Thicket, Texas.
