Mercantile was founded on 19th September 1880 at a meeting for interested oarsmen and arranged by our first Captain William Boyd at the Young and Jackson’s Hotel.

Most involved had a previous association with the Warehousemen’s Rowing Club and so the initial name of the Club was the Junior Warehousemen’s Rowing Club.

No attempt has been made to cover in full the broad spectrum of the sport of rowing in Victoria or Australia or at an international level except to the extent that events beyond the immediate confines of Mercantile affected the policies of the Club and the lives of its members within the Club.
