Mercedes Lackey Phoenix and Ashes Reviewed by Katie Dean
Mercedes Lackey is not the first author to have thought of retelling a classic fairytale, but the elements needed to turn this story into a compelling novel for adults are sadly lacking.
Lackey is constantly at pains to tell the reader about the horror and terrible waste of this darker chapter in European history.
Lackey is guaranteed success with such a popular fairytale that has already stood the test of time.

Mercedes Lackey obviously spent a great deal of time creating this elaborate, self-contained world, but the story suffers a little because of it.
Lackey has put together an amazing world, but it seemed to me as if she created the story to fit her setting, and not the setting to fit her story.
If Mercedes Lackey has created this to be first in a new series, I would highly recommend reading the future sequels, because without all of the introductory information, the tale of Vetch and his dragons is intriguing.

I like Mercedes Lackey's writing style and the general plot of the trilogy, which is its saving grace.
It was the first trilogy in the Heralds of Valdemar series (although she went back and did some prequels as well, but that's not the point).
Withen and several of the other supporting characters were a bit stereotypical, though I think Lackey added a good bit of three-dimensionality to them, and gave original insight into why such characters were the way they were.

Mercedes Lackey helped start the trend with The Fire Rose and continues it with The Serpent's Shadow, a variation on "Snow White." But Lackey takes the story of a maiden in peril helped by seven little men and changes it to a maiden in peril helped by -- seven Indian gods?
I loved that instead of seven dwarves, Lackey invested seven animals -- a small Hanuman langur (monkey), a peacock, a Saker falcon, two mongooses, an Indian ringneck parrot and an Eurasian eagle/owl -- with the avatars of seven gods of the Indian pantheon.
Again Lackey shows what a master writer at the top of her form can do.
