Mercia (Old English Mierce – "border people") was one of the kingdoms of the Anglo-Saxon heptarchy, centred on the valley of the River Trent and its tributaries in what is now the Midlands of England.
The term survives today in the name of the West Mercia Constabulary, commercial radio station Mercia FM in Coventry, and also in that of the new British Army infantry regiment, the Mercian Regiment.
The name Mercia is Old English for "boundary folk" (see marches), and the traditional interpretation was that the kingdom originated along the frontier between the Welsh and the Anglo-Saxon invaders, although P.

The 97FM signal is by far the strongest, from the transmitter at Shilton, near the M6/M69 junction, and is for Coventry, and the much weaker signal 102.9FM for Leamington Spa.
Classic Gold 1359 is based here as well, which is Mercia Sound's old MW frequency, before April 1989.

Coventry's Mercia Sound was Britain's 21st commercial radio station, launched by Programme Controller Ian Rufus at 6:58am on the morning of Friday 23rd May 1980, using 220metres 1359kHz Medium Wave, and 95.9 vhf FM Stereo beamed from a transmitter at Shilton near Ansty in Leicestershire.
Mercia continues to broadcast on the same two frequencies, 97.0 and 102.9 FM, from the Hertford Place studios in Coventry and is currently licenced until 31st December 2009.
Rugby FM carried out one RSL in 1998, then a set of follow up research to gauge audience response, and subsequently won the advertised licence against the face of stiff and arguably stronger competition, however the RA reported in their report of the award that they felt Rugby FM submitted the stronger application.

After March 1993 Mark was moved to the drivetime programme on Mercia Sound during the week, but still presented the Sunday Late Show, which was carried on both Mercia FM and Leicester Sound.
During this time Midlands Radio, which owned Mercia FM and Leicester Sound (among others) was sold to Capital radio plc, who later sold on Mercia and Leicester to GWR who changed the format of the stations and moved Mark around the schedules.
After finishing work with Mercia FM in 1995, Mark moved to another Coventry based station, KIX 96, but here he presented the breakfast show for two years, after which the midlands lost his talents for a while as he moved to Wigan to launch a new station called WISH FM.

One of the recurring themes of our discussions in Spain last week was that despite the wealth of experiences we've all had in and out of radio over the years, Mercia has made the greatest and most enduring impression on all of us.
You are quite right Jim, of all the stations up and down the UK that I listened to in the 1980's most were excellent, but none could quite match the receipe of professional presentation and inspired programming provided by Mercia Sound.

Mercia was different today because i think the tagline that Leicester Sound like you say have been used for months and i'd imagine since the new tagline was only introduced yesterday (monday) then i think Mercia are just bedding it in, However i could be completely wrong.
I think that the tagline change so far has been effective However in the mornings between 10 and 2 with Richard Neale no disrespect to him but he chooses the majority of the songs in the today category, it can be very rare to hear an 80's/90's song in the morning.
If anyone from Mercia is reading this i would stress that to play more 80's and 90's music as your tagline suggests especially in the morning's after 10am.
