Mercury (automobile) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mercury is an automobile marque of the Ford Motor Company founded in 1939 to market semi-luxury cars slotted between entry-level Ford and luxury Lincoln models, similar to General Motors' Buick brand and DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler brand.
Mercury was its own division at Ford until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division, with Ford hoping the brand would be known as a "junior Lincoln", rather than an upmarket Ford.
Mercury's heyday was in the 1950s, when its formula of stretching and lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful.

This announcement occurred in conjunction with the formal signing ceremony for the Memorandum of Understanding that was developed by the Mercury Automobile Switch Workgroup (Workgroup).
It is estimated that approximately 200 tons of mercury are tied up in automobile switches on the road in the United States today, and 10 tons of this mercury are in automobiles recycled each year.
The majority of the mercury from automobile switches enters the environment when the crushed automobiles with switches still intact are melted as scrap in the steel and iron making processes and the mercury is emitted to the air.

NRDC Backgrounder: Another Major Source of Mercury Pollution: Light Switches in Scrapped Cars
Mercury escapes into the air from automobile switches when older cars are crushed and melted down, and the amount of mercury in car switches is substantial.
There are several factors that underscore the need for prompt action to address this problem: mercury's threat to public health, the significant contribution that mercury switches make to nationwide pollution, and the fact that the window of opportunity to remove the mercury from cars manufactured before 2002 is limited.
The agency's delay means that more and more mercury is released daily from cars that are recycled with their switches intact, notwithstanding the fact that the Clean Air Act required EPA to issue stringent regulations by November 2000 for sources that account for 90 percent of mercury pollution nationwide.
