Mercury Atlas 7 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The original prime crew for Mercury Atlas-7 was Deke Slayton, however Slayton was controversially removed from all flight crew availability after the discovery of cardiac arrhythmia during a training run in the g-loading centrifuge.
The mission used Mercury spacecraft #18 and Atlas #107-D. Mercury spacecraft #18 was delivered to Cape Canaveral on November 15, 1961.
Mercury spacecraft #18 — Aurora 7, used in the Mercury-Atlas 7 mission, is currently displayed at the United States Astronaut Hall of Fame, Titusville, Florida.

 Mercury
Mercury was named by the Romans after the fleet-footed messenger of the gods because it seemed to move more quickly than any other planet.
Although Mercury is not tidally locked to the Sun, its rotational period is tidally coupled to its orbital period.
Mercury is marked with great curved cliffs or lobate scarps that were apparently formed as Mercury cooled and shrank a few kilometers in size.

In 1974 and 1975 roughly 45% of Mercury was mapped by the Mariner 10 spacecraft at an average resolution of 1 kg/pixel, with less than 1% mapped at resolutions between 100 and 500 meters.
Upon final arrival at Mercury on, respectively, (1) 8-9 July 2002, or (2) 21-22 June 2004, the Isp=315 bipropellant engine fires at 450 Newtons to place the spacecraft into an elliptical 12-hour Mercury polar orbit with 200 km altitude periapsis at the equator and 17,560 km apoapsis (7.2 Mercury radii).
Mercury's axis is a fraction of a degree from perpendicular to its orbit, so there are no Earth-like seasons, no sunrise or sunset at the poles, only the slow rotation and the swinging closer to and further from the furnace sun.

 2003 Transit of Mercury
The position angle is defined as the direction of Mercury with respect to the center of the Sun's disk as measured counterclockwise from the celestial north point on the Sun.
Since Mercury's orbit is inclined seven degrees to Earth's, it intersects the ecliptic at two points or nodes which cross the Sun each year on those dates.
The next transit of Mercury occurs on 2006 November 8-9 and is visible from the Americas, eastern Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Mercury is a small planet and so far away that it is tiny compared to the h uge solar disc.
Mercury will enter the solar disc at 07:12:56 in Norwegian summertime (CET +1 hour), be in the middle of the transit at 09:52:23, and leave the disc at 12:31:46 (the times will vary with only a few minutes at different places on the Earth).
Mercury will then be in the middle of the transit at 16:00 which starts at 12:15 and lasts until 19:45.

 Mercury 7
Until Aurora 7 reached the communication range of the Hawaiian station on the third pass, Christopher Kraft, directing the flight from the Florida control center, considered this mission the most successful to date; everything had gone perfectly except for some overexpenditure of hydrogen peroxide fuel.
Aurora 7 seemed to be ready for the landing, and the recovery forces knew within a few miles the location of the spacecraft as radar tracking after retrofire had given and confirmed the landing point.
The status of Carpenter and Aurora 7 was unknown to the public.

SPACE MEDICINE IN PROJECT MERCURY - Chapter 7
DOD performance of specific missions assigned for support of Project Mercury was also his responsibility, although budget aspects of DOD participation would conform with policies and procedures of the Office of the Comptroller and Director of Public Affairs.
The purpose of the medical monitors for Project Mercury would be to preserve the health of the pilot by providing remedial advice, during the flight, evaluating the current medical status of the pilot, and correlating spacecraft data and physiological data with the mission profile.
There would be two types of monitoring stations for Project Mercury: The purely monitoring stations which could make medical recommendations to the pilot or assist the control center in decisions, and the command stations which, together with certain launch and control central positions, were to be regarded as key sites.

At Mercury Control Center an engineer at the telemetry control console, William Saunders, noted that "segment 51," an instrument providing data on the spacecraft landing system, was presenting a strange reading.
Almost immediately the Mercury Control Center ordered all tracking sites to monitor the instrumentation segment closely and, in their conversations with the pilot, to mention that the landing-bag deploy switch should be in the "off" position.
In the Mercury Control Center, at the tracking stations, and on the recovery ships ringing the globe, engineers, technicians, physicians, recovery personnel, and fellow astronauts stood nervously, stared at their consoles, and listened to the communications circuits.

As the Atlas separated from Aurora 7 there was a gentle drop in the acceleration forces and Carpenter was soon reporting his elation at achieving orbital flight.
Mindful of the Liberty Bell 7 hatch incident, Carpenter checked the position of his craft in the water and found it was lying deeper in the water than would be safe for a nominal side entry exit, so with effort he squeezed out of the neck exit at the top of the spacecraft.

SPACE.com -- Gus Grissom didn't sink the Liberty Bell 7 Mercury capsule
But unlike Shepard's Freedom 7 spacecraft, Grissom's Liberty Bell 7 was equipped with a window and a new hatch design capable of being thrown clear by explosive charges as needed after splashdown.
Later experience would show that if a Mercury astronaut were to detonate the hatch from the inside, the amount of force necessary to hit and activate the plunger would leave a nasty bruise, which Grissom didn't have.
Whatever the cause, the hatch blew, the rescue helicopter couldn't save the capsule and Liberty Bell 7 spent the next 38 years at the bottom of the Atlantic until it was found and recovered last summer during two expeditions led by diving expert Curt Newport.

The mission lasted 7 days, 22 hours, 55 minutes and 14 seconds, 120 orbits were completed at an altitude of 349.8 kilometers and the crew landed on August 29, 1965, recovered by the USS Champlain.
