  Mercury - Wikicars
Mercury is an automobile marque of the Ford Motor Company founded in 1939 to market semi-luxury cars slotted between entry-level Ford and luxury Lincoln models, similar to General Motors' Buick brand and DaimlerChrysler's Chrysler brand.
Mercury was its own division at Ford until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division, with Ford hoping the brand would be known as a "junior Lincoln", rather than an upmarket Ford.
Mercury's heyday was in the 1950s, when its formula of stretching and lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful.

Mercury's original major success has been attributed to the Ford Marquee in the early 50's as it stretched and lowered then existing Ford platforms which in turn generated superior results from their target markets.
From 1955 to 1960, the Mercury Montclair was both manufactured and sold by the sole Mercury Division and from 1964 to 1968 by Ford's Lincoln-Mercury Division.
The Montclair was discontinued in 1961, yet was resurrected for the 1964 model year until it was once again retired at the end of the 1968 model year.

CanadianDriver: Motoring Memories - 1955 Mercury
Early Mercurys were really like deluxe Fords, and it wasn't until the big corporate restyling took place in 1949 that the Mercury got its own distinctive Lincoln-like lines.
Although Lincoln and Mercury were corporate siblings, they were establishing reputations at opposite ends of the automotive spectrum: Lincoln in racing, and Mercury in fuel economy.
The 1955 Mercury was "big, bold and beautiful," as the advertisers liked to say in those days, taking many of its styling cues from the "Mexican Lincolns." The car's wheelbase had been stretched to 3,922 mm (119 in.), 89 mm (3.5 in.) more than Ford's, although the station wagon stayed at 2,997 (118).

The introduction of new models, such as the Milan, the Montego, and the Mariner, and the upcoming Meta One concept (likely to be named Magellan) would seem to bear that out.
