The Mercury name comes from the Roman god Mercury and during its early years, the Mercury brand was known for performance.
Mercury was its own division at Ford until 1945 when it was combined with Lincoln into the Lincoln-Mercury Division, with Ford hoping the brand would be known as a "junior Lincoln", rather than an upmarket Ford.
Mercury's heyday was in the 1950's, when its formula of stretching and lowering existing Ford platforms was very successful.

The Montego name (presumably derived from Montego Bay, Jamaica) was an intermediate vehicle in the Mercury line.
The Montego replaced the intermediate Mercury Comet in 1968 and was replaced by an expanded Mercury Cougar line for the 1977 model year.
The Montego replaced both Mercury Sable and Mercury Marauder and includes an optional all wheel drive.
