Mercury Music Prize - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Mercury Music Prize is a music award given annually for the best British or Irish album of the previous 12 months.
The award can in no sense be seen as representative of prevailing trends in popular music, as the winning album is selected from the shortlist by an extremely small panel of individuals from within the music industry.

Scotsman.com News - Mercury Music Prize - Scots bands dominate music award shortlist
The Mercury prize honours the best album of the last year by a UK or Irish act, chosen from a wide range of musical genres.
Now in its 13th year, the Mercury prize is judged on talent and innovation rather than commercial sales, and the winner can usually expect a surge in sales and publicity.
The prize is seen in some quarters as a credible alternative to the more mainstream Brit Awards, but critics have accused it of being wilfully obscure, often picking "token" acts from the classical, folk and jazz fields.

What It Is: Muscular mope-rock; sensitive and meaningful music created by a traditional line-up of bass, guitar, drums, and vocals; Radiohead-lite; reconnecting with the spirit and the soul in the face of increasing celebrity; Kraftwerk and Pogues-biting arena-rock; the most exciting record you may ever hear in your entire life.
The dance music is taken care of by the Go Team!, the gritty suburban punk is taken over by Maximo Park and the Kaiser Chiefs, and the attitude is usurped by the band that actually does what lead singer Richard Archer wants to (“be as big as Eminem”), Coldplay.
