Mercury (element) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mercury is used in thermometers, barometers and other scientific apparatuses, although the use of mercury in thermometers has been largely phased out in clinical and scientific environments (in favor of alcohol-filled, digital or thermistor-based replacements) in the interests of health and safety due to the toxicity of the element.
Mercury is still used in some cultures for folk medicine and ceremonial purposes which may involve ingestion, injection, or the sprinkling of elemental mercury around the home.
Environmental releases and disposal of mercury is regulated in the U.S. primarily by the EPA.

It's Elemental - The Element Mercury
Mercury was known to the ancient Chinese and Hindus and has been found in 3500 year old Egyptian tombs.
Mercury is not usually found free in nature and is primarily obtained from the mineral cinnabar (HgS).
Mercury vapor is used in streetlights, fluorescent lamps and advertising signs.

 Where is Mercury In Schools?
Mercury may have been used historically in a school's laboratory, and the laboratory may still have containers of mercury or mercury compounds in storage.
If mercury is used in experiments, often it is possible to use other chemicals to illustrate the same chemistry principles, or do microscale experiments to reduce the amount of materials necessary and reduce the need to have large quantities of mercury at the school.
If mercury is used as part of the curriculum, make sure to have a mercury spill kit available, and that staff are trained in its use.

 ATSDR - ToxFAQs™: Mercury
Mercury combines with other elements, such as chlorine, sulfur, or oxygen, to form inorganic mercury compounds or "salts," which are usually white powders or crystals.
Mercury salts are sometimes used in skin lightening creams and as antiseptic creams and ointments.
Mercury's harmful effects that may be passed from the mother to the fetus include brain damage, mental retardation, incoordination, blindness, seizures, and inability to speak.

 Mercury
The density of mercury decreases as the temperature increases, because of the thermal expansion of mercury.
The excellent mercury battery, and to a large extent the nickel-cadmium cell, have been suppressed because of the mercury and cadmium they contain, which are a hazard with unwise disposal of used batteries.
The mercury evaporates at the cathode spot and condenses on the cool walls of the envelope, controlling the pressure of the mercury, which should be in the neighborhood of 1 mmHg.

Municipal Solid Waste - Commodities: Batteries   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-02)
The versatility of batteries is reflected in the different sizes and shapes, but all batteries have two common elements that combine to make power: an electrolyte and a heavy metal.
Batteries contain heavy metals such as mercury, lead, cadmium, and nickel, which can contaminate the environment when batteries are improperly disposed of.
Battery labels must include the battery chemistry, the "three chasing arrows" symbol, and a phrase indicating that the user must recycle or dispose of the battery properly.

As you might have noticed, mercury batteries are banned in the United States due to environmental safety.
Varta, a leading battery manufacturer, officially announced the discontinuation of mercury batteries in December of 1998 due to European safety laws.
Then I took a long look at the original mercury batteries and found that the metal forming the battery's jacket on the positive side was continuous around the sides until curling inward on the negative side.

Mercury is found in both high- and low-voltage mercury arc rectifiers, oscillators, motor control switches, phanatrons, thyratrons, ignitions, and silent-switch thermostats and in the cathode tubes used in radios, radar and telecommunication equipment.
In alkaline and carbon-zinc batteries, mercury was used to protect the zinc cathode from oxidation and prevent the evolution of hydrogen gas.
Mercury thermostat probes, also known as flame sensors or gas safety valves, are usually present as part of the safety valve that prevents gas flow if the pilot light is not lit.

Mercury batteries once were available is sizes to a "D-cell" in volume; used for references in electronic equipment.
Mercury batteries are not the first time that photographers have relied on mercury: In the early days of photography one of the early processes required photographers to develop their glass plates in the fumes of boiling mercury!

This is the best imitation of a mercury battery that is possible; voltage stability is excellent; there is no current drain when the camera is turned off; and you get the full life of the silver oxide battery, which is a year or more.
Since mercury cells had a flat voltage response until they died it was cheaper to use a mercury cell and a simple cheap circuit that did not correct for voltage fluctuations in many cameras.

I recently bought this old camera, and found out that its meter is calibrated for the 1.35V mercury batteries, which are no longer made.
Just as a curio, the Spotmatics (up to the F) are not sensitive to battery voltage, so no ASA setting change is necessary (but the battery shall be placed in the compartment inverted, since mercury polarity was opposite to silver/alkaline).
They are smaller than the battery chamber, but even if they move around, they will still be in contact with the electrical contacts.

With the decline of mercury used in batteries, mercury-containing lamps (MCLs) and devices (MCDs) are quickly becoming the largest sources of mercury in Florida's municipal solid waste (MSW) stream.
Mercury contamination in Florida is most evident from the fish consumption advisories due to high mercury levels in certain fish in a number of Florida lakes and in the Everglades.
The Florida DEP has responded to this mercury contamination with research to better understand the problem and its causes and with environmental controls to reduce the potential for mercury to enter the environment.

in 1996, specifically prohibits the sale of any alkaline manganese (except for button cells containing up to 25mg mercury) and zinc-carbon batteries that contain mercury that was intentionally introduced (as distinguished from mercury that may be incidentally present in other materials used to produce these batteries).
The Mercuric Oxide battery was used for applications that required a high energy density and a flat voltage curve.
The current delivery of Mercuric Oxide batteries was determined by the type of electrolyte.

ACE Camera Photography Magazine, Substitutes for the PX-625 and PX-13 Mercury Batteries
It is now illegal to manufacture or sell batteries containing mercury in the United States.
The alkaline batteries offered as replacements for the PX-13 / PX-625 are poor substitutes for the reliably consistent voltage supplied by mercury photo batteries.
If the 1.5 volts were consistent it would be relatively easy to manually compensate for this, but alkaline batteries (unlike mercury cells) decline in voltage during their lifespan making it near impossible to accurately adjust the meter reading.
