Mercury-vapor lamp - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Mercury vapor lamps (and their relatives) are often used because they are relatively efficient while still offering better color rendition than either high- or low-pressure pressure sodium vapor lamps.
When the lamp is first turned on, mercury-vapor lamps will produce a dark blue glow because only a small amount of the mercury is ionized and the gas pressure in the arc tube is very low (so much of the light is produced in the ultraviolet mercury bands).
The mercury vapor lamp is a negative resistance device and requires auxiliary electronics to prevent it from destroying itself.

The High Pressure Mercury Vapor Lamp
The Mercury vapor lamp has evolved considerably, with newer lamps containing additional ingredients in their discharge tubes, to improve the emitted light.
When the lamp is properly wired, the existing voltage initiates an Argon glow discharge between the main and the auxiliary electrode pair(s), causing a sufficient number of Mercury atoms to be ionized.
Although the intensity of all the visible Mercury lines in the arc is such as to make the lamp's light appear green/bluish white, the lamp's spectrum is severely lacking in red emissions.

 Mercury Vapor Lamp Life
Rated life of Mercury Vapor lamps is based on survival of at least 50% of the lamps tested and allows for individual lamps, or groups of lamps, to vary considerably from the average.
The normal mode of failure of a Mercury Vapor lamp is significantly reduced light output due to lumen depreciation or inability to light.
Mercury Vapor lamps are affected less than other HID sources by a reduction in operating hours per start.

 NJDEP-Radiation Protection Programs
The mercury vapor lamp is of the non-extinguishing type provided it is installed within a totally enclosed lighting fixture with a protective shield which protects the lamp from damage and absorbs shortwave ultraviolet radiation.
"Mercury vapor lamp" means any mercury vapor or metal halide lamp incorporating a high-pressure arc discharge tube that has a fill consisting primarily of mercury and that is contained within an outer envelope (it does not include the tungsten filament self-ballasted mercury vapor or metal halide lamp).
"Non-self-extinguishing mercury vapor lamp" means a mercury vapor lamp which does not comply with the requirements for a self-extinguishing mercury vapor lamp, hereinafter defined.

 High Pressure Discharge Sources
The steepness of the curve suggests why mercury vapor is the only lamp that is listed with a rated and a usable life: long before we reach rated life (when half the lamps have failed) the remaining lamps are putting out such a small fraction of their rated lumens as to render them unusable.
Metal halide lamps are similar in construction to mercury vapor lamps in that the light producing element is an arc tube which contains two operating electrodes and a starting electrode.
All mercury vapor lamps manufactured after 1982, require a "disconnect mechanism" to disable the arc tube if the outer enclosure is broken to prevent dangerous UV exposure.

Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp - Patent 4370595
Low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp suitable for use in photo-therapy and having a glass discharge tube which is opaque to shorter wavelength ultraviolet radiation and bears a luminescent layer on its inside surface.
The invention relates to a low-pressure mercury vapor discharge lamp for radiation purposes having a discharge tube made of glass having an absorption edge between 280 and 305 nm, the tube being coated on the inside with a luminescent layer.
When the lamps according to the invention are used, it is therefore possible, in order to obtain the same quantity of useful radiation as that emitted by one of the said known lamps, to reduce the radiation time by more than 40%, while the erythema dose is reduced by approximately the same percentage.

 BTH 400 watt MA/V Lamp
Mercury vapor lamps with 400 watt quartz arc tubes (the lower wattage quartz lamps came out earlier, however) were introduced in 1948, and eventually became the standard in the 1950s.
Although the basic technology for mercury vapor was first invented as a low pressure tube (called the Cooper-Hewitt tube) back in 1901, commerically available mercury lamps using medium to high pressure arc tubes did not come out until 1933, and were developed by GE in the USA and BTH in England.

 Fluorescent and HID Lamps
Mercury vapor, metal halide and high pressure sodium lamps are HID lamps.
Mercury vapor from a broken tube escapes to contaminate anyone nearby and the immediate area.
High intensity discharge lamps (HID) lamps should be managed as dangerous waste because they are known to contain regulated amounts of lead as well as mercury in the base of the lamps.

UV Lamp Ballasts From Hill Technical Sales
Ballasts provide an instantaneous high voltage to strike the elements within a mercury vapor lamp, creating a plasma that, once initiated, is sustained by the ballast.
Constant wattage is accomplished by a resonant tank circuit in which the lamp winding is in a controlled magnetic saturation with AC capacitors, such that voltage swings on the input side have a very small impact on lamp current.
Lamp current is sensed in a closed feedback loop circuit which can instantaneously respond to changes making the necessary adjustments.
