In 2001, Mercy Corps expanded its presence to Guatemala in response to a request from a group of private donors working in the municipality of Tucurú, in the Department of Alta Verapaz.
Mercy Corps main office and two of our three programs are based in the departmental capital of Cobán, about 200 kilometers and 4 hours drive from Guatemala City.
Mercy Corps seeks to contribute to improved standards of living in Alta Verapaz through strategic alliances with other important actors including grassroots citizens groups, local and national NGOs, local and national government, international agencies and donor organizations and the private sector.
