Mercyful Fate hails from Denmark and is arguably Venom’s side kicks in the pioneering of the fl metal genre.
Unfortunately, Mercyful Fate are not too known and their music seems to be overlooked by other bands of their era such as Metallica and the whole thrash movement.
Yet, on that note, Metallica paid homage to Mercyful Fate on their 1998 cover compilation Garage Inc by playing an 11+ minute Mercyful Fate medley, which has parts of most of the songs on this album and the whole song Evil.

Fate   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-07)
Fate was founded in 1985 by former Mercyful Fate guitarist Hank Sherman (aka Rene Krolmark) with former Maxim vocalist Jeff Lox Limbo (aka Jens Meinert), bassist/keyboardist Pete Steiner (aka Peter Steincke) and drummer Bob Lance (aka Bjarne Holm).
Shermann later again formed Zoser Mez and re-formed Mercyful Fate and along with Bjarne Holm he plays in Gutrix, Virus 7 and started a career as a photographer in his real name Rene Krolmark.
In 1990 Fate returned in a revitalised version and released the dynamic and powerful "Scratch'n sniff" album produced by Tommy Hansen in the Jailhouse Studios - and dis-banded, because EMI bought danish label Medley and they did not want to re-sign the group.

Melissa, their full length debut and follow-up to the much bootleged Mercyful Fate EP (1982), is quite simply a classic album of dark metal.
The first four tracks are the self-titled Mercyful Fate EP released in 1982 by Rave On Records, which was hard to come by in the U.S. and was heavily bootlegged.
Mercyful Fate devotees are urged to seek this out, but the uninitiated should start out with Melissa or Don't Break the Oath.

 Mercyful Fate CD Reviews
Our esteemed editor RScott was only too happy to give me the latest Mercyful Fate CD to review.
I had heard of King Diamond (I always thought he was a Gene Simmons wannabe) and I had heard some good things about Mercyful Fate, but I never really got a chance to sit down and listen closely to either of them.
This CD has convinced me that Mercyful Fate is one of rock's premier bands of the late 20th century.

Mercyful Fate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Soon it was apparent that Shermann, Denner, Diamond and Denner's bassplayer, Timi Grabber, fit well together as a unit and those players performed under the Mercyful Fate moniker for the first time in Denmark.
There were the usual member changes for a young band; Denner left and then returned and drummers came and went, but finally Kim Ruzz established himself as the drummer.
King Diamond has, since the initial split, kept together a very successful solo band.

 ProgressoR - Detailed Reviews - Mercyful Fate - 1983 - "Melissa"
I personally really like four (of 1986-1989, 1997) albums created by Fates Warning, but their first album "Night on Brocken", released in 1984 (!), showed by no means progressive metal, but just a speedy hard-rock in the vein of Iron Maiden.
To understand this fact (if only progressive metal is also your piece of the cake) you need just a few listenings of "Melissa", especially the second part of the album, where the songs Black Funeral and, of course, the titletrack shine like diamonds.
Unlike the next album of Mercyful Fate with more direct structures, "Melissa" contains all the necessary components of (heavy) progressive such as these: various themes and arrangements, changes of tempos and moods, etc., within any separate song from the album.

That is part of the mystique of Mercyful Fate.
What I did was to form this thing called Fate, a kind of melodic heavy rock band, American style, and they did four albums, I appeared on two of them, and that was within two weeks after Mercyful Fate split, in 1985.
Mike Denner left King Diamond and, also, Mercyful Fate during the first week, and then he re-joined the King Diamond band, because he was supposed to play on the Fate album, he actually appears on that first album.

Mercyful Fate : Don't Break the Oath - Listen, Review and Buy at ARTISTdirect
All of Mercyful Fate's potential was fulfilled on Don't Break the Oath, a doomy, gothic collection of post-Priest/Maiden fl metal preoccupied with Satan and the occult.
Hank Shermann and Michael Denner keep their progressive rock tendencies reigned in while still delivering plenty of the neo-classical feel that gives the music its atmosphere, and King Diamond uses his vocal range to great theatrical effect.
Fate's sound and attitude were highly influential on later gothic/fl metal bands, especially in Europe, and Don't Break the Oath consistently encapsulates their appeal.

Mercyful Fate emerged from Denmark in the early 80's to become one of the most important metal bands of the decade.
But their reign on top was short-lived, as King's Satanic views weren't shared by the rest of the band, and Shermann's desire to play a different form of music forced the breakup of the band around 1985.
Since the reformation, King Diamond (the band) and Mercyful Fate have co-existed simultaneously, with King singing in both bands and the two bands basically taking turns releasing albums.
