A native of Gwynedd, Merfyn Jones joined the University of Wales, Bangor in 1990 as a Senior Lecturer in History, after having served as a lecturer, Head of Department and Dean at the University of Liverpool.
Merfyn Jones is a well-known and prolific historian, his main interests centering on modern and contemporary Wales.
In 2003 he was appointed to the Board of Governors of the BBC and was a member of the Nominations Committee established recently to appoint the new Director General of the BBC.

Mike Jones & Robin Moses travelled to Welshpool for the Breidden Rally in a quest to score Welsh Championship points but despite 'Crikey' having a good night on the maps, it was the car that let the team down with a snapped steering rack.
