Celebrating their tenth year, the Meridian Arts Ensemble is more active and prolific than ever, spending almost six months out of the year touring, preparing and solidifying material for recorded release, commissioning new material, and adding new arrangements to their repertoire.
People are exposed to a whole lot more diversity in music and art, and I think that they are taught in their schools an appreciation and respect for the process of creating art.
The immediate effect of the arts is always a loss of money, and if you live in a culture where the immediate gain of money is the definition of "good," then you're not going to have classical art forms.

 ITG News: Meridian Arts Ensemble tours and new works
The Meridian Arts Ensemble continues its 2003 - 2004 concert season with a November tour of The Netherlands, followed in January - April by concerts in the northeast and southern United States, featuring specially commissioned works.
The Meridian Arts Ensemble (MAE) has received a commissioning award from Chamber Music America and National Endowment for the Arts for a new work for brass quintet and drum set by New York based composer / guitarist Elliott Sharp.
The MAE recorded commissioned pieces by Elliott Sharp, Milton Babbitt, David Sanford, and Nick Didkovsky in October 2003, for its eighth CD release on the Channel Classics label (Netherlands).

The San Antonio Vocal Arts Ensemble will present “Ancient Echoes,” which recreates ancient music of the Holy Lands The music includes original prayers of Jesus sung in his native Aramaic, Levitical liturgical music from Jerusalem’s Second Temple, music of the followers of Jesus and the courtly music of Herod’s palace.
The Meridian Arts Ensemble features five brass players and one percussionist, perform an innovative, multi-genre repertoire from Frank Zappa to J.S. Bach, and from Renaissance and Baroque music to Afro-Cuban dance styles — to name a few.
MAE has performed on public televisions’ Live from Lincoln Center and has been featured on national Public Radio’s Weekend Edition and on St. Paul Sunday Morning.

Though the group is known internationally for their versatile brass sound (they play everything from Bach to Captain Beefheart) many at Colgate have heard of the group from one of the Meridian Arts Ensemble's most devoted fans, University President Neil Grabois.
He explained that though they are not a dance band, the Meridian Arts Ensemble does play a lot of rock, including music by Frank Zappa and Jimi Hendrix.
The Meridian Arts Ensemble is now in its ninth season and has performed everywhere from Columbia, to Alaska, to Japan.

What characterises their playing is the immaculate ensemble, seldom allowing soloistic playing by any member, which often mars the performance of other less-capable brass quintets (which typically lean heavily on their lead trumpet).
Nonetheless, the Meridian Arts Ensemble is dead serious about expanding the possibilities of the brass quintet, and their respect for this music is much deserved.
Meridian may well be one of the only groups that have it on the agenda to champion the music of this period.

Cords is a regular member of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, a chamber group that combines Western instruments and the music and instruments of the present-day countries along the ancient Silk Road trading route in newly commissioned works by composers from those areas as well as in traditional repertoire.
She was honored with one of the first Solo Recitalist Fellowships from the National Endowment of the Arts in recognition of her outstanding gifts as a flutist and received the American New Music Consortium Award for distinguished performances of contemporary music.
He is the recipient of many scholarships and awards, and holds a BFA and MFA degree from California Institute of the Arts, a MM degree from Yale University, and a DMA degree from the State University of New York at Stony Brook.

The Meridian Arts Ensemble has bucked the system and brought forward something that most record companies wouldn't touch - and in their boldness they have made a valuable contribution to comtemporary music.
There are wonderful moments of standard brass ensemble work, very skillfully executed, but the Meridian Arts Ensemble wanted to go out on a limb, so they took a chance and have thus filled a niche that is often ignored.

For those familiar with the strangeness of Frank Zappa and John Cage, the music of Meridian Arts Ensemble and Margaret Leng Tan is certainly nothing surprising.
Still, these Julliard schooled musicians know what they are doing, and their impeccable quality allows them to be listened to by a normal person without too much confusion.
