What is Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) ?
Meridian Lossless Packing, or MLP, is an audio coding scheme using proprietary technology, that has been developed over three years by Meridian Audio and its associates.
MLP is a simple-to-decode method optimised for the new requirements brought about by applications like DVD Audio, and in particular has been optimized to enable more opportunities for multichannel and for audio at high sample rates with high precision.
MLP is an audio coding scheme that discovers the redundancy and packs the audio into a smaller space — but in such a way that a simple decoder can recover the original signal exactly bit-for- bit.

Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) - Surround Professional Magazine
MLP however, won the war and is the mandated lossless data compression system used by DVD-A. As a DVD disc can only deliver a maximum data rate of 9.6 Mbits/sec., there simply isn’t enough data available from the disc to deliver 24 bit words at 88.2 or 96 kHz sample rate audio all ‘round.
Lossless compression means it does nothing to the dynamic range or, for that matter, any other aspect of the audio.
MLP uses linear prediction, whereby a carefully chosen filter is applied to the data in order to remove the correlated or timbral portion of the signal, leaving only a low amplitude residual signal not removed by the filter.

Meridian Tests Player Functionality With DualDisc
Meridian has carried out tests on DualDisc functionality with their players, and has found that DualDisc is compatible with the majority of their players.
Meridian advises consumers to use this side of the disc in their Meridian DVD players because their players do not always play the CD-compatible side since the player optics are not designed for such thin CD layers.
Meridian ROM-based CD players: Meridian has found that the 588 and G08 use a ROM drive whose optics are optimal for Red Book CD but are not optimised for CD-compatible layers as thin as those used on DualDisc.

Sonic Solutions Introduces World’s First Integrated MLP Encoder for DVD-Audio
MLP, which was developed by Meridian Audio, allows more than 74 minutes of a six-channel, 24-bit, 96kHz audio stream to fit onto a single-layer, single-sided DVD-Audio disc and guarantees a decoded output that is bit-for-bit identical with the original stream.
With MLP it is possible to use full-resolution, 24-bit, 96kHz audio on all six channels of a surround presentation even though the overall bandwidth of the original master tracks would exceed the bandwidth available in a standard DVD disc.
Lossless coding produces a variable rate of output data, and it is necessary to keep the peaks low enough for use on carriers.

 MLP - Meridian Lossless Packing
Meridian Lossless Packing, a lossless compression algorithm used in the DVD-Audio specification to increase the playing time.
MLP differs from other data compression techniques in that no significant data is thrown away, thereby claiming the "Lossless" moniker.
MLP is also a standard for the 96 kHz/24 bit portion of the new DVD-Audio disc, and will be licensed by Dolby Labs.

 Sweetwater inSync
The important word in all this is "lossless;" to maintain the full frequency response and dynamic range of the 24-bit/96kHz surround signal, MLP does not alter the final signal; it just "packs" the audio data to fit a smaller rate and space.
MLP uses a particular form of stream buffering that can reduce the variations in transmitted data rate, absorbing transients that are hard to compress.
The MLP process also reduces the size of audio files by 30 to 50%, thus allowing more than the standard 74 minutes of surround audio to fit on a DVD-A. MLP can also be used to simply get longer stereo recording times onto the disc, whether the files are at 96kHz or 192kHz sampling rates.

Some factors were out of Meridian's control — their booth location in the Las Vegas Convention Center home theater area had more ambient noise to contend with than in the more sedate Hilton Center last year.
Mindful of copy protection issues, Meridian has implemented a proprietary encryption protocol to ensure the integrity of the digital signal, which is then processed, converted to analog, and fed to the appropriate drivers from within the speaker itself.

MLP has the distinction of being the only lossless packing scheme that has qualified as an official standard to date, having been selected by DVD Forum as the standard form of data reduction for use in DVD-Audio.
Meridian has been careful in qualifying MLP; the company recognizes that the amount of data reduction that can be achieved without loss will vary with the characteristics of the program.

The MLP compression process does not depend on assumptions made about incoming data; instead, it works on the audio waveform, using three proprietary technologies to reduce file size: first, non-data is removed from the audio file; second, matrixing is used to reduce the correlation among channels using a large palette of special filters.

MLP is different than perceptual or lossy data coding schemes such as Dolby Digital or DTS.
MLP does not alter the final decoded signal in any way, but merely ‘packs’ the audio data in such a way that a simple decoder can recover the original signal exactly bit-for-bit.

 Paul Stubblebine : DVD Audio
MLP, as its name implies, is a lossless data compression scheme, which means that the information is not changed in any way, the dynamic range of the music is not affected, and neither is any other aspect of the program.
The MLP encoding only takes place if the data rate would exceed 9.6 Mbits/second, so it is the producer's option to avoid using data compression by using lower sample/bit rates in the less important surround channels.
MLP can perform this function and so engineers have the option of using MLP's down mixing tools to design some of the characteristics of resulting stereo image.

A MLP encode engineer might intentionally, on their own, choose to slightly compromise the integrity of the music of a difficult encode in order to meet a deadline, rather than taking the time necessary to go the two or three attempts in order to do it with zero loss.

MLP can offer up to 4:1 lossless compression, which means that a losslessly compressed soundtrack, bit-for-bit identical to the original audio, can be stored in the same space — or less — than with conventional lossy techniques.
In addition, MLP can be used to encode various forms of metadata, allowing the system to expand to encompass new surround-sound modes as they are introduced, including hierarchical formats in which surround playback can be automatically optimised for the capabilities of the replay system.

Glossary: Meridian Lossless Packing (MLP) | Sweetwater.com
An audio encoding scheme using technology developed by Meridian Audio that is the industry-accepted standard for compressing audio data on DVD-Audio disks for transfer and decoding by a DVD-A player.
MLP uses a complex combination of filters, entropy coding, prediction and buffers to compress (encode) that signal so it can be transferred at the 9.6MB/second rate, and then decode (uncompress) it for playback by a DVD player.
MLP can also be used to simply get longer stereo recording times onto the disc, whether the files are at 96kHz or 192kHz sampling rates.
