Meridian Broadcasting - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Meridian Broadcasting (ITV Meridian) is the holder of the ITV franchise for South and South East England.
Some consider this controversial, particularly as the Meridian South East programme for Kent and East Sussex is presented by Hampshire-based anchors from a studio in Hampshire, 60 miles from the nearest part of the South East region (Brighton) and 160 miles from its furthest point (Broadstairs).
In 1994, MAI bought Anglia Television and in 1995 was a major shareholder in the consortium that won the franchise for Channel 5.

Meridian Tonight was the new early evening regional news programme that replaced Coast to Coast, with Debbie Thrower and Fred Dinenage presenting the South edition from the Northam studios in Southampton whilst Alison Holloway and Mike Debens presented the South-East edition from Maidstone.
Initially Meridian Television was part of United News and Media (UNM), and when the ITV franchise ownership regulations were relaxed in 1994 UNM bought Anglia with HTV being acquired in 1997.
Meridian moved out of the Northam studio complex (which was now too old and large for its requirements) later in 2004 and relocated to an industrial estate near Fareham, which was something that Meridian had initially planned to do when it won the ITV franchise but decided against doing so at the time.

Meridian had plans to establish its headquarters at an industrial unit near Fareham in Hampshire but as the studio complex at Northam was still available, Meridian decided that it would be cheaper to continue working from Northam as opposed to investing in a whole new complex.
Anyway, Meridian wisely guessed that the best time for a proper station introduction would probably be for the early evening when more people are watching, so the low key introduction at midnight was probably appropriate given the circumstances.
Meridian started making more programmes of its own as the years went by, though its network presence still remains steadfastly low (“Hornblower” being a rare exception) and is more likely to remain so as ITV now becomes more centralised, especially as Meridian is now part of Granada Media.
