Farmers Without Land: The Plight of White Tenant Farmers and Sharecroppers   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-13)
With Mississippi’s devastated economy in the years following the Civil War, increasing numbers of white landowning farmers were also reduced to the status of landless farmer.
Many of Mississippi’s small white landowning farmers, also known as yeoman farmers, had not been heavily involved in the cotton economy before the Civil War; however, after the war, a number of factors led the white yeoman farmers to turn increasingly to cotton cultivation.
By 1900, 36 percent of all white farmers in Mississippi were either tenant farmers or sharecroppers (by comparison, 85 percent of all fl farmers in 1900 did not own the land they farmed).

In the background is her mother, Luvenia Slaughter, who pioneered into the Mississippi Delta in 1908 and raised 12 children there before leaving it for an easier life of work in Toledo, Ohio.
Then there is the author herself, Constance Curry, who under the auspices of the American Friends Service Committee funneled limited but meaningful monetary support to the Carter family during the years of their dramatic and lonely struggle and forged an attachment to the family that spanned 30 years.

 Charlie Patton
In rural Mississippi, fls as well as whites danced hoedowns and square dances, and when Patton used a sideman--even on blues records--it tended to be a fiddler, Son Sims.
As for the title character, Tom Rushing (his name was mispelled by whoever took down the title for Paramount Records) was a deputy in Bolivar County, and when some blues experts tracked him down in the 1980s he recalled Patton coming to see him after the record was released and presenting him with a copy.
A perfect example of this is Patton’s very first recording, “Mississippi Bo Weavil Blues.” This is a cousin of the song that Leadbelly and others made into a folk standard, a ballad of the bol weevil, a tough little bug that was destroying cotton crops and impoverishing farmers throughout the South.
