A Jird is part of the Meriones family, where as a true gerbil is Gerbillus.
In general the Meriones are much larger than the Gerbillus, with Pallid and Cheesman Gerbils being the largest of the gerbillus family and are still around only half the size of a Mongolian.
The largest Meriones are the Persians and Shaw's with Persians being a few centimetres longer than the Shaw's.

Idomenus runs into Meriones, who is returning to his ship to get a new spear to replace the spear that he lost in battle.
Idomenus tries to rouse Meriones' courage, and he offers him spears from his own shelter since it is closer than the encampment of Meriones.
The beginning of Book 13 focuses almost completely on this goal of psychological salvage, and once Idomenus and Meriones move to the left part of the battlefield we can see that the payoff is high.

They are the most widely known species of the Gerbil subfamily.
The gerbil species Meriones unguiculatus originally developed on the semi-deserts and steppes of Mongolia.

One of the commonest subspecies in captivity, Meriones crassus perpallidus, was previously (incorrectly) known in Holland and Germany as Meriones shawi II.
This is an atypical environment for this species, as the other subspecies from different parts of the range prefer drier, rockier habitat.
The shipment consisted mostly of reptiles but, packed in crates as food for the snakes, was a species of Jird tentatively identified as Meriones sacramenti, the Negev or Buxton's Jird.

Oxidative stress and aging in the Mongolian gerbil (Meriones unguiculatus).
The objective of this study was to determine if aging in the gerbil, Meriones unguiculatus, is associated with elevation in the level of oxidative stress.
Results of this study are interpreted to indicate: (i) that the level of molecular oxidative damage to DNA and proteins increases with age, and (ii) that the increased oxidative damage is due to both an an elevation in the rates of oxidant generation and an increase in the susceptibility of tissues to oxidative damage.

Chances are you have the most common type, called the Mongolian gerbil.
The scientific name is actually meriones unguiculatus, which when translated from Latin means "little clawed warrior" or "warrior with fingernails." You can probably see how well this translation physically describes your gerbil.
This name, however, can be a little misleading, since your gerbil is known as the most docile of small furry pets.
