		Merkys suggested to accept ultimatum and wanted to resign but because of disagreements with USSR on the next Prime Minister he was forced to be head Cabinet of Ministers for few more days.
		On 17 June 1940 Merkys accepted demands of USSR, assigned Justas Paleckis as new Prime Minister and resigned.
		Merkys with family tried to leave Lithuania but on 17 June 1940 was arrested.

		Merkys is a river in southern Lithuania and northern Belarus.
		Merkys flows 13 km through Belarus, 5 km along the Belarus-Lithuanian border, and the remaining 185 km through Lithuania before joining the Neman River near Merkinė.
		Merkys is a popular destination among water tourism enthusiasts as part of it belongs to the Dzūkija National Park and it flows into the Neman near a historical site of Merkinė.

		Never before had I felt entirely at ease as I stood in a small crystal clear tributary of the Merkys river surrounded by endless wild forest casting to the sound of birds high in the pine canopies.
		There are few scattered forest tracks and few roads near to the banks but it seems that the Merkys has found solitude as it edges through the land towards the Nenunas River.
