Decorated charmingly by different artists, the colorful mermaids are stroking the air in public spaces in Norfolk, mainly, but also in Virginia Beach and coming soon to Portsmouth and Yorktown and perhaps other localities.
Two mermaids are suspended from the ceiling at Waterside Festival Marketplace in downtown Norfolk, each bearing a belly tattoo of the USS Wisconsin, the longest and last American battleship, which is bound for Nauticus, the National Maritime Center.
Whoever stole the mermaids from the ODU studio and the little mermaids from the Bank of America building and whoever vandalized the mermaid close to the airport are risking more than slaps on the wrist.

On Monday, 6 November, at 3.00 pm, the Avenues Fountain Rescue team, led by Harry Atkinson, had a meeting with Paul Ashton at the Hull City Council Stepney Lane depot to view the broken pieces of the Park Avenue fountain.
As can be seen from the photos, the main bowl is largely intact, but most of the other features — the mermaids, the herons, various leaves, are in so many pieces (perhaps 100) that it would be difficult to put them back together again.
The Avenues Association is very grateful for the generous help provided by Mr Ashton in explaining the current state of play concerning the prospects for replacing the fountain(s).

Both bridges spanned Fall Creek.  The College Avenue Bridge was considered an engineering marvel, as its piers were set at an angle, in line with the flow of the water rather than the roadway above.
At the time of construction the Thirtieth Street Bridge featured two stone mermaids on its central buttresses.
