Perhaps the Merovingian was the program that added cause-effect elements to Matrix beta 2 (the second version of the Matrix described by the Architect that also resulted in failure) to bring a level of simulated choice in order to keep human minds from rejecting it.

Trivia: The Matrix Reloaded (2003), Enter the Matrix (2003) (VG), and this film were shot back-to-back.
Such an egotistical, maniacal character should be the focus of more attention than what he received in what is supposed to be the best movie of the trilogy.
My only complaints were that the Merovingian was grossly underused, the fate of the Twins and some other characters was not explained, and the Kid's triumphant "The war is over!" at the end was a bit premature, given what we had just watched for the last two hours.

I was wondering about all of this speculation on the Merovingian's role in Revolutions, and according to the cast credits of The Matrix Revolutions (thanks to imdb.com) he isn't even in the movie.
They had a character named allah that was going to be in the movie.
That was due to a name change of one of the characters, though I cannot remember which one.
