Merredin is a small wheatbelt town in the agricultural region of Western Australia, four hours' drive from the capital of Western Australia, Perth.
Merredin's history varies from that of other wheat-belt towns in Western Australia in the sense that it started as a stopping place on the way to the goldfields.
The Goldfields-Esperance region is one of the nine regions of Western Australia.

By 1904 Merredin was the locomotive depot for the line and there were a number of small branch lines reaching out into the wheat-belt to service the surrounding farmers.
To the west of Merredin is the tiny settlement of Burracoppin where, in the 1920s, the novelist Arthur Upfield (famous for his 'Boney' detective stories) worked clearing scrub.

The surviving structure near Merredin is on private land, and is currently used for storing grain and is not accessible to the public.
Rob Endersbee told me that the VDC troops stationed in Merredin during the war were told that the installation was a radar unit, however none of them that he has spoken to remember seeing any sort of "array" or even aerial wires.

Merredin signal box stood on wooden piles on the island platform of the station by that name, which was situated about half-way between Perth and Kalgoorlie.
The cabin was large by Western Australia standards, containing a 95-lever McKenzie and Holland lever frame.
This type (known locally as "staff columns") was extensively bused on single lines in Western Australia, although in other parts of the country the "miniature" version was more common.
